Transmission issue: stuck in gear w clutch depressed

I have the same issue with mine and I've came to the conclusion a couple of years ago it's the lack of grease making it bind. Mine also is intermittent. The RPM will hang at around 1200 and it is hard to downshift. I can blip the throttle and it will drop down and shift fine. There were a few threads a couple of years ago and that's when mine started acting up. I've put off pulling the tranny and cleaning and lubing it. I was a little late following this thread and actually thought it may be time to fix mine.

an update...
ive driven the car 600 miles since this happened on that day, one drive was a RL run of about 300 miles and pushed pretty hard, no further sticking or behavior. i have no friggin idea how this would just go away but the transmission has been shifting 100% normally and smoothy now. even while trying to recreate the conditions it was doing it on that day, i get nothing. perhaps i had overheated the transmission? or put something out of alignment... im thankful as all seems to be normal again. I have the Porsche Optimol grease in my cabinet though should i need it later. hopefully not.

We know how that turns out!

Thought I would check in to see if the problem (last report was about 1-1/2 years ago) had resurfaced. For completely selfish reasons since I have the exact - albeit consistent - issues.

Hi Andrew.
I did the following:
Shell gear oil from sunset
Replaced engine mounts w wevos
Added FunctionFirst tranny mount reinforcement
The problem totally went away. I've tried (hard) to induce it and can no longer reproduce it. It's prob been about 4000 miles now.

Kevin,
Any chance it was an alignment issue with your goldenrod install, that has somehow worked itself out? I was following your post and kept thinking motor mounts, but kept my keyboard yap shut and just followed along...
Glad all is good in the hood!

this def started right after the golden rod. but i didnt think they could get out of alignment. as installing it didnt require anything to be lined up really.
it was easily reproducible. high revs, jam on the brakes and try and shift out of gear and it would stick just for a second.
my hunch is something was either out of alignment or close to it... and through the process of disconnecting the golden rod, lowering the motor and tranny to do all the mounts, putting it all back, the new stiffer mounts got it where it needed to be. i was really freaking out that a tranny rebuild was moments away from wiping out my checkbook it was a great relief to get my butter smooth shifting back again...
the wevos are a lot harsher than my old C4 OEM mounts but i have come to like them. fitting for a 20 year old car. because they went in at the same time as the FunctionFirst reinforcement, im not sure what effect it had on things.

Thanks for the succinct instructions on what worked for you. I ordered the Function-First transmission guide. Inexpensive enough to give it a try. I'll do the motor mounts as well. I already had changed out the transmission fluid in hopes this would improve shifting. It didn't.
I have a sinking feeling (after reading how you were able to consistently re-create this sticking by hard breaking, etc.) that I may have a different issue. I consistently have the sticking issue (on down shifting) and only taping the gas (with clutch in) allows me to take it out of gear without issue. I have a feeling that it is the corroded input shaft in need of greasing that may be my problem. We'll see in a few weeks when I get around to the fix. Thanks again.

Somewhere I posted a guide w photos of the FF tranny reinforcement may be helpful. I think in the larger FF thread
Keep us posted. Remember to get the right grease mentioned earlier in this thread.

Andrew, on the up side you hear about very few of these gearboxes going bad, but many linkage problems. I would take your linkage apart and inspect bushings etc and reinstall first. You might try a different gearbox fluid. Were there any big bit's on the magnetic plug? Have you bled your slave cylinder lately. I would consider motor mounts too like emb. I'm not one to shotgun parts but like emb says on a 20 year old car...
