Default Becker cdr220 faceplate too dim

Hoping someone has encountered this (and solved it).
I had becker upgrade a cdr220 faceplate so it could be read in the 993. Worked great, until it didn't. Now it is too dim to read all the time (not angle related). If I open the faceplate I notice as I'm closing it its bright again for a tiny bit during the process of latching it closed again. but once fully closed it is very dim again. There must be some trigger or switch in the latching mechanism that is controlling this. But I can't locate anything or any brightness adjustments.
Any experience with this? thanks

bill

I have the beginnings of the same issue. I suspect somehow it is the light sensor being overly sensitive though I'm not 100% sure. I have a call into Stefan @ SW Stereo (who modified the faceplate for me)...

Just had a chat with Stefan. He informs me that ALL of them are like that. Apparently:

1) All CR-220s/CDR-220s have a faint illumination around the buttons / **** ring.

2) All the advertisements / stock photos show BLAZING illumination (I've included a reference photo) but this is not to be believed

3) interesting note -- the LATER shiny faceplate has a more robust "LED Eye" at the top middle and is less susceptible to cracking than the EARLIER dull faceplate. (this is a common failure mode --- cracked "LED Eye")

4) the holy grail are some super earlier displays ---- some super early displays have black letters on an orange display and those can be seen better in daylight. Stefan has one of those but some of the digits are missing.

I'm marginally happy with my screen too. It needs to be brighter in sunlight. In cloudy days, it's ok. At night it's fantastic. Stefan did my faceplate mod. He told me that is about as good as it gets.

Did you see the thread on the 964 page about it? There is rl-er who has done what seems like a different version of the faceplate mod with some user adjustability.

Hmmm ... sounds like my experience too, JB 911.

No, I haven't seen the 964 thread. I'd love to read through it. I did find this 928 thread about a different gentleman who modified the faceplate himself but didn't say anything about adjustability -

Hi, I would like to update this thread to let everyone know about the happy conclusion to this query. JB911 and myself contacted Jim Corenman (the rennlist member refernced in the 928 thread) who modified our faceplates that had already been modified by SWStereo.

The results was that both of our faceplates are now significantly brighter. Thank you, Jim.

Default Jim Corenman CDR-220 mod is recommended.

I just got my Jim Corenman modified face plate back and for the first time ever I am able to actually read the text while in a normal sitting position. There is even an adjustment pot so that I can adjust the screen brightness.

Kudos! I highly recommend this excellent mod to make the CDR-220 usable in the 993. Jim also turned this around in a record time. He was a pleasure to do business with.

Now, to address the sticky ***** and find a good way to integrate an ipod player...

Pete

He wanted to see mine as it had already been modded once by Stefan. He undid that mod, did his mod. I will say he is an enthusiast doing this at enthusiast prices, its not going to break the bank. I'd send him a pm and tell him what you have.

Thanks. Will do. I see that a number of people are going to the continental 7412. Looks interesting. A fraction of the price of setting up the cdr220 and all of the latest technology. I have the CD-R 220 in the car now. Works well except I can't see the display during the day. I also have a Grand Prix unopened sitting on the shelf. Maybe it is time to either install that or pass it along to another renin lister. Thx. Phil

I finally had the CDR 220 faceplate modified. Becker Auto Sound did the work for me. (I actually had two faceplates done). Becker turned them around in a day, not to mention that they gave me a great price for modifying the pair. Got them yesterday and tested one out last night. WOW, what a difference. Drove to work today and almost had to put shades on, not really, but you get the drift. After years of practicing my braille with the unmodified faceplate, I can now see the number, the stations names and assorted other info. I guess I can now get rid of the Grand Prix 7990 that has been sitting on my shelf, unopened and never used. Let me know if you are interested before I put it up on Ebay. thanks This is a great site, thanks to all of you for the treasure trove of info. Phil

I just installed the CDR in my 964 turbo. Screen is too hard too read.
I did this mod to my 993 a few years ago but my screen is easy to read.

Who is modifing these or selling the modded face?
