Default question about the light above the ignition switch

I have searched and read about the light only being on the later 993s. I have a 95 and would like to see if I can put the OEM light from a 97-98 into my 95. I have read this thread which was very helpful.

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-1995...hting-diy.html

I would like to do this but with the OEM parts. I stopped by the dealer and he can't find any part number at all for this light. He can't even find anything that shows there is a light above the ignition. Does anyone have a picture of the light or a part number? I may just do like the tread above did, but wanted to see if anyone can help first. Thanks guys.

I had the same response from my local dealer, so i used the DIY.

It was cheap and easy to do -- and works well.

Why not use the light on the key?

According to PET the light is the same as that in the ashtray. What PET doesn't show is any sort of a light cover so you might have to find a non OEM solution. Having a bare bulb hanging out of a hole would not be my preference

I also do not have the light. I was thinking of doing something a little creative and different and totally reversible. I'm going to buy a new ignition trim cover. Then modify it to allow a faint ring of light to come through it. Then I can wire in a led bulb and have it light up when when the door is opened just like the other lights. Sounds like I have another winter project!

It is the same part as the ashtray light, its just a grommet with a right angle bend and there is a hole to hold the bulb. The parts are cheap from Porsche. I have a spare I got from Porsche with a bulb but it will pobabely be cheaper to buy the part from Porsche than I would to post.

Some cars already have the hole in the metal for the grommet, just feel through the vinyl for a round hole above the ignition switch.
I also found the part numbers for the bulb and bulb socket

There is a tiny hole in the dash metal for the bulb already - just feel for it.

The rubber ash tray light holder would be of little use as the bulb would be horizontal and mainly shrouded by the rubber of the holder. The guts of the light are inside the dash, only he tip of the bulb shows above the ignition key - see photo.

All the parts required from radio shack to do the job might cost $5 max......

The ash tray light holder is what is used from factory.

Sorry for the quality of the pics, they were taken on my phone.

It's neat -- how do you change the bulb?

If it's anything like the ash tray bulb it's a pita - Imho

My 95 C4 does not have the light, my 97 C4S has the light. I must say it is useful when it's dark out. It' always been one of those things that I thought would be good to add to the 95.

I have never had to change the bulb but i think it's a matter of pulling one of the clocks out of the dash and reaching down to the bulb
