Default New Zealand Rennlisters - Customs duty on online purchases from offshore?

Can any NZ Rennlisters tell of their experiences dealing with Customs when bringing parts in from overseas through online retailers?

I understand that at the very least, GST would be payable.

Sure is. I got stung on a couple of key remotes that I ordered from Sunset Porsche. Even with GST added I still got two remotes for the price of one here in NZ.

You can get lucky but don't count on it.

a little OT (because I am in Finland, not in NZ), but here's how my latest purchase worked.

1. Order a $75 pulley from US
2. Pay $150 US for shipping (all together $225) because UPS was the only shipper they would use.
3. Upon entering EU pay 4% customs and 23% value added tax on total cost (0.04x225 + 0.23x225)

=> End up paying nearly $300 for a $75 pulley, just because only shipping method was UP$... What a rape!!

Shipping to both Finland and Australia from the US is very expensive. I recently sent an NOS antique motorcycle cylinder to Finland and the shipping was more than the value of the cylinder.

But here is a story for you.

Last December I had a custom set of stainless pipes made in the UK for one of my bikes. They arrived here in March of this year.

Yesterday I got a bill from a collections agency for $30 plus a $4 dollars collection fee.

It seems ParcelForce uses Fedex to fly it over then the USPS system delivers. The bill was for Fedex charges. I've never received a bill or statement from Fedex, and should not have, but the collections notice arrived yesterday, seven months later.

If the info was not accurate on the bill, I'd figure it was some kind of scam.

Regards,

Check out the NZ Customs web site, there is a duty calculator which will tell you how much you have to pay on any value in currency of purchase.

Fellow kiwi living in London. If any guys from back home need assistance with shipping items I`m happy to act as an intermediary and send a "gift" back home. Might not work with big items but worth a shot.
