Default Air conditioning died

Today the air conditioner stopped working on my 993. All it does is blow ambient air. Up until now (including yesterday) it was working fine.

Any suggestions?

Is your compressor kicking in when you turn your AC on?

Most probably a leak in the A/C system, and the low pressure switch has stopped the compressor from running. Common issue...

Yes, check that the single lead from the magnetic clutch on the A/C compressor hasn't disconnected itself from the connection within the passenger side electrical panel. Give it a light tug to verify.

Next, check the A/C relay under the driver's side electrical panel.

Both panels are in the engine compartment in plain view.

Recharged, with dye. No obvious leaks. It worked great for about 5 minutes, then started blowing hot air. I turned around and drove back to the repair shop. On the way there, it started blowing cold again. Has been OK since.

Has anybody else experienced this?

One or more of air flow control servos are probably beginning to give up the ghost. This is next on the checklist after a recharge. Have a look on the page I linked in my previous post.
Cheers,
Tore

No leaks noted? My bet is with what Alex said above. Check all your connections.

Eric, I don't know what your diagnostic skills are, but would you be able to check the A/C relay to see if a signal is getting to it to activate it? If it is working, then I'd check the wire to the A/C magnetic clutch. If the relay is not switching, then you have a problem downstream....low pressure as Tore already mentioned...and that would mean a freon leak as verified by a set of gauges.

It could be other things as well, but these are the fast 'n easy things to check....ten minutes if that.

An RLer posted a DIY along with the link to Griffiths for A/C parts.

An involved job if it is the evaporator.

I wonder if the tech removed the driver's front fender liner and checked all the A/C related parts there. He can always use a freon sniffer.

If you have a good relationship with that repair shop just ask them if they can toss a set of gauges and check the pressures, and tell them what happened, sometimes a good shop will toss you a bone if your a good client.

Make sure the fan on the condensor (I think it's the condenser) in the left front wheel well is not obstructed and is turning on properly.

We've had a heat wave since the AC was recharged and it has worked perfectly since that first glitch. So if it ain't broke.....
