Default heater blower won't switch off

Have an odd problem with my pre-vario 993.

Took it for a spin this morning and since I got back the heater blower in the engine bay won't stop running even though the ignition is switched off. I've had to unplug the blower to stop it running the battery down. I waited for the car to cool down and then tried to reconnect the blower but it still getting live power so I've had to leave it disconnected.

Any ideas why this blower fan keeps running even though the ignition is off and the key out?

I'm wondering if there is a sender on the engine that thinks it's still hot.

Does the heater blower draw heat away from the engine when the car is parked?

I'd check the relay and make sure it isn't latched "on".

I think it is located on the driver's side in the engine bay.

Thanks I'll take a look at the relay if I can find it.

How do I tell if it's "latched on" though?

Cheers

The fuse box contains loads of relays. How do I identify which one is the rear heater blower relay?

For starters, take the handle end of a screwdriver and give the relay casing a few good taps.

Loads? There are only a few back there.

There is a fuse & relay layout diagram on the inside of the cover.

Brilliant, all fixed and it was just as you predicted.

It's the big relay with a number 1 sticker on it in your pic above.

A little tap with a screwdriver, then reconnected the fan and hey presto - nothing - just like it should be,

Thanks Alex, much appreciated.

Great but not so fast for two reasons.

1) if it was the relay stuck in the "on" state, the blower motor should have been connected first and then the relay tapped to see if the blower motor shut off instantly.

2) the circuit driving the relay could have been powered up for some reason and then shut itself off before you tapped the relay to free it up. The blower fan stays on after the engine is shut off under certain conditions.

Take the relay back out, pop the cover on it and check the circuit board. If you have some female push-on connectors that you can crimp onto some wire, test the action of the relay using your car battery. The circuit is printed right on the relay cover. Also check the solder joints on the relay; its one of their weak points.

As Alex says, very common for the relay to pack up, £28 for a new one so not the worst news
