Default 100% plug'n'play aftermarket ECU for our cars for under $1000

Hey folks,

A lot of guys are installing aftermarket parts on their 993's, such as cat bypass pipes, sport cats etc. etc.
According to my experience, the engine will run a bit lean at WOT because there is no adaption to the better flowing system. (on partial throttle there is lambda correction). My car made 279hp and 345Nm with 200-cell sport cats. The torque curve was very rough, which is often a result of a lean mixture. The white tail pipes after track session confirm that.
I went ahead and installed the Motec M600 engine management system and after abt. 2.5hours on the same dyno we made 310hp and 395Nm. A stounding +35hp and +50Nm and this is not just on the peak values but there is 40-50Nm troughout the entire power band!!

The total cost for achieving this was abt. $3500 and I made the adaptor harness my self.

Now, my friend has engineered and built hundreds of tailor made engine management systems for several different applications. He also asked me (when I was getting the Motec) if I wanted him to build one but the processor he was using at that time did not allow for sequantial injection and there were some other important things that couldn't have been addressed with it. So I went ahed with the Motec.
Today I spoke to him about the immobilizer and he promised to take a look at it. At the same time he asked me if he could build a ECU for the 993 and test it on my car. He is now using a 3rd generation processor which is capable of everything that the original Motronic is.
He said once he finalizes the engineering on it he can build and sell them for less than $1000. It would be a 100% plug'n'play ECU that you can tune on any PC.
100% plug'n'play means you can switch between this ECU and the original Motronic by just unplugging and replugging. No need to touch the original wiring harness etc.
It will use the original sensors, actuators and instrumentaton installed on the engine.

If there is interest in this product, I will let him test one on my 993 and then he can send it to anyone who is interested in trying it over in US (for free).
My car is originally a US version so we could dial in base maps so it would be easier to start with.

Edit: He would first make one for a 1996 3.6 Varioram with the 88-pin 5.2 Motronic unit (as that we can test with my car). Other models are possible but he doesn't have enough info on them to do it yet. He knows the 5.10 well because he helped me make the adapter harness for the Motec.

Edit2: Plug and play applies only to the physical installation of the ECU. This is a standalone system that will need hours of dyno time. It is not a drop it in and go -mod.
Allthough, identical cars with identical mods can use the same mapping and they can be easily shared. You can also tune the car yourself, just have a pro do the WOT mapping on a dyno and then drive around with a lap top and finetune the partial throttle maps, cold starts etc.

I'd be down for that and would be happy to test it. Can the custom ECU eliminate potential SAI and secondary O2 error codes?

Can this proposed new unit be adapted to 993TT? Easily reprogrammed (eg Ruf Turbo R tune)?

It would give a rats *** about those...

No, it's not possible to "program" a Ruf tune on it. It has to be dialed in on a dyno.

The 95 is trickier since there is no car to test it on. We have the needed information so it can be done but it will require a person who is willing to spend some time testing it and shipping the prototype back and forth if any corrections need to be made.

I might be interested as well. I have a 97 cab which I spent $$ to upgrade my ECU and programming. I sent the ECU to Steve Weiner just to find out that some previous owner went to great length and installed a 96 pcb into the housing of a 97 model. So it couldn't be modified. I ended up buying a true 97 ECU and had Steve do the chipping. It's been running absolutely great and I have no complaints whatsoever but I'm always up for some other stuff and 1k $ isn't a bad price if it is what you say it is or will be in that case.
Please let me know when you have something to show for.

My question regards "Edit 2" Are you saying that if we have different mods than the one it is originally tuned for than we would have to spend hours with a tech and dyno time to get it tuned specifially for our cars? Can or one be made for a car without engine mods (stock)? Thanks
