Default California smog and 3.8 liter 993 engine

Has anyone built a 3.8 and submitted it to California's smog test for an OBD 1 1995 car?

Did it pass without ECU or other changes?

Ideally I would like to build a 3.8 with Dougherty RS cams ground on a 114 degree lobe center (which apparently do pass; stock RS on 112 deg lobe center won't)...and still pass CA smog.

I am curious what others have "gotten away with" here as far as engine mods go here in crazyville.

I think the 3.8 should pass fine, the cams may be the issue. Most of the time, if the engine is in tune, & the fueling is right, you will pass.

If you are not going to do a chip, then you add a AFPR (adjustable fuel pressure regulator) & get the A/F set properly to pass SMOG.

Did you go through with the 3.8?

Yup. I have. I see this is an old post, though.

Yessir, we have done two of these specific type engines and both passed CA smog. One was a non V-Ram and the other had the V-Ram intake system. Both used RS cams on 114 LC's. Software is critical toward passing. Both had OEM exhaust systems on the car during the tests.

One of them is owned by the incredible Mr. Kaufman (see above).

The package you guys put together for me is what's incredible, Steve. Thanks again for making my dream-car come to fruition. I couldn't be happier with it (especially since adapting my clodhoppers to the LWFW). It took some time for the build to get dialed in, but it was well worth the wait.

Do you recall the exact grind on the cams? It might be instructive to this discussion. They were described as Elgin RS-plus, if I recall correctly?

Edit--you already mentioned that, huh? 114 LC

What I'm curious about is how Singer registers their cars in California. Seems like a cool trick. I'd love to get a nice stack of ITBs to replace my Varioram intake.

Anyone have any insight into this?

Yes, that's the problem when you own a E39 M5 and experience the wonderful throttle response ITBs offer. I wish my 993 had the throttle response my M5 has.

yes 'correct' ecu software on the air cooled 993 gen engines is key for passing CA smog...

Josh,

Singer cannot get their cars smogged and licensed in CA since they are using 964-based chassis. CARB certification is required and I understand they are working on that.

Its a very tall hurdle.

One would assume the Singer owners in California are registering the cars in Montana...

Yes, indeed. Those e39 M5s are gems. Great throttle response, for sure. They are so much fun to drive for such a heavy car. I plan to keep mine for the duration.

Me too. Taking a break from installing Koni Sports on my M5 as I write this.
