Default Can't see your CDR-22 CR-22 display in a 993...Problem solved!!!

Hi all,
I've been thinking about this one for a while....and have come up with a solution. It involves completely dismantling the front face of the unit, and then modifying the actual LCD display with a scalpel. As a result of the modification, the overall appearance of the display is brigher and the digits are equally visible from all angles. I am really pleased with the result and I reckon you guys will be too, as I know many of you have had this problem with the CDR-22/CDR-220, CR-22/CR-220 in a 993 or 964. Here is a picture of the display viewed from the front taken in a dark garage.

Great if it indeed works but can you post a picture of it in the sun? How exactly do you modify the face with a scalpel? Do you scrape off anything? Please be specific. Thanks!

The eureka moment cam when I realised that Becker could not have done that much to "optimise" a standard Mexico head unit for the 996. I also firgured out that polarised light had something to do with it. After that it just took some care and *****.

Here is a pic in daylight.

Here is the method, there is plenty of scope to mess this up so take care.:-

Dismantle the removable front with fine screwdrivers...it just clips apart.

pull the circuit board with the display on it away from the front housing.

remove the lcd display from the circuit board by twisting the various tabs etc.

gently pull the lcd away from the metal housing and the white plastic housing it sits in so you have just the glass in your hand. Be really careful not to damage the rubber contact strip of the LCD.

Using the scalpel, gently !! prise away the polarised coating that sits on the BACK of the lcd, effectively governing the angle that light can pass through the LCD. Once this coating is removed, the back light passes straight through the display...hey presto...

Reassembly is the reverse...

Good luck, and for the first time in 9years of Porsche ownership and rennlist, I feel i've achieved something you guys may get some value from.

Taj.

Honestly, that doesn't look very good. It may be a little brighter, but there's not enough contrast and the color is bizarre. Instead you can send the faceplate to Becker and they'll mail you a new one designed to be brighter and visible from any angle. I think it costs $75 or something like that.

The pictures don't do it justice..as you can see from the appearance of the dash. What you can see is that regardless of the viewing angle the display is consistent and visible which is all i was looking for. Best of all it works and its free. As for contrast, when mounted in the 993, this faceplate normally provides no contrast, where as now at least I have some. The colour is just brighter, closer to the colour of the text.

I assume this has the added benefit of actually being able to see the display with polarized sunglasses?

Again, no offense, but compare the pics of your display with what the $75 updated faceplate display looks like. No comparison. Not even close. (I stole this pic from a BMW forum, FYI.)

No offence taken. You are looking at a picture of a CDR-23 equivenant. It has a different display, a dot matrix one.

There's a big difference in the picture quality too - if Taj says it looks good, why would everyone be so dubious?

Okay. But I have the same 996 radio as you do in my 993 but with the updated Becker faceplate, and it looks almost exactly as crisp and bright as the pics above...to each his own.

Because we are Porsche drivers and -- by definition -- know better than everyone else.

Duh.

[for anyone who takes this seriously and gets offended, please don't; it's a joke, as in not serious]

Thanks to jcorenman, this is my CR-2200 modified by myself.
