Were should the oil level be on the dipstick, midway or to the top?

FYI to get the accurate oil level reading the oil needs to be hot, like coming off the freeway fully warmed up, then driving around town in traffic for 20 minutes hot. Then and only then add oil to half way up the dipstick and confirm with the oil level gauge.

From my experience if you try to keep the oil level at the top of the dipstick you will be continuously adding oil. Just let the oil drop to the car's happy spot (most likely about half way down). Don't add oil until it falls to the add mark until you learn where that spot is.

Worked on my '88 911 (3.2L) and both my 993's.

And yes, check the oil when fully hot with the engine running.

Did you accidentally fill the gas tank with Olestra?

Wait a minute, do I understand that they "drained" the oil and then added only 4 qts??!! Sounds like what is done for my mother-in-law's Taurus wagon, not for a 993!! Agree with others take it elsewhere.

So how many miles did they beat it....err drive it, before they thought they heard noises, and felt compelled to add oil, not knowing what the hell they were doing?
