Thumbs up Porsches on Pikes Peak: Int'l Hill Climb; Jeff Zwart in Colorado Springs- GT2RS, 993s

The day RLer mcipsEric won his Concours class & the People's Choice Award at Dana Point, CA, he & I met Jeff Zwart -- amazing Porsche cinematographer, and reigning champion of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

One of Jeff's homes is here in CO & we have a couple of mutual friends; everything I heard from them left me with more respect. Having finally met him & casually hung out around Porsches here & in SoCal, I'm even more in awe. A great, talented, yet unassuming & approachable man.

Let's celebrate him and Porsches in America's 2nd-oldest motorsports race

Starting off with a couple of photos of 993s he's won his class in, racing to the clouds:

According to the owner of this 690 horsepower 993,
Jeff Zwart raced it up the Pikes Peak hill climb on July 4, 1995 in the High Performance Stock category.

From recent "RLer mcipsEric: Concours winner, cover model, track star!" thread, here's Eric 'taking the stage' with his killer 993 & Jeff:

He races the above GT2RS this year, which he just to drove to CO from CA. I heard him say it was ~1,100 miles, & that he averaged >50 MPH & ~23 MPG

(...& hopefully zero speeding tickets!)

Jeff talked about how the race course can vary 30 degrees from the ambient temperature at starting altitude to the top -- 14,100 feet, ascending
~160 turns. Part of the excitement's the challenging weather: could be fine at the bottom and snowing or hailing higher up.

In the meantime, your car loses ~30% of it's power. IIRC, he mentioned a car having 375 hp at the race's base (~9,400 feet above sea level), and crossing the finish line with ~275 hp.

I think he said this GT2RS has 620 hp.

From the 997 GT2/GT3 Forum's "wheels for a centerlock RS" thread:

What a way to make an entrance!

Jeff driving in to meet a few us this week, with the Pikes Peak front range's foothills in the background:

Light-weight doors.

Track shoes of choice: 18" wheels.

This year's ascent is scheduled to be the last that includes the dirt course: the mountain road's planned at 100% tarmac paving by next year.

There was a stock GT2RS there next Jeff's Hill Climb car.

Besides these stunning machines, there was the official pace car, & a 911 for master of ceremonies, actor Paul Walker of "Fast & Furious" fame; shared with Colorado Springs' Mayor.

Rinty-- Zwart's the man!

He talks about that race in this video, with many quotable soundbites.

One to paraphrase:
Q: "How scary is Pikes Peak?"
A: "If you make a wrong turn, you have the rest of your life to think about it."

Besides the new rides inside, there was great eye candy outside, too...

Jeff Zwart took a couple of these photographs himself at Wed's meeting. The rest were taken afterward, on the Peak.

Although this week's high temperature's ~95F in the foothills, notice the snow during the climb:

Zwart's my role model ("roll" model? ) ... he's who I wanna be when / if I grow up!

This year, Zwart has returned in a 997 GT2 RS street car—and not just any GT2 RS. His red 911 is the very same GT2 RS that’s on the cover our August 2011 issue. That’s right: He’ll compete in #429 of 600, the U.S. press car.

Zwart’s move to the GT2 RS is an interesting one: He gives up the GT3 Cup’s flat-shifting sequential transmission, which he fell in love with last year, but gains a mountain of torque as well as the high-altitude advantages of forced induction. He tells us that the GT2 RS is tire-limited, but he’s impressed with its power, stating he saw 112 mph between corners in practice yesterday.

We’ve experienced this car’s speed firsthand while testing it against the GT3 RS at Laguna Seca earlier this year.

We’d say Zwart is one to watch this year, but he’s facing tough—and unexpected—competition from longtime friendly foes: the Millen clan.
