The course started out flat then climbed to the top of the mountain overlooking all of Marin and San Francisco County. It was like being on Mt. Tamalpais with views for days.

Ed-- Speaking of race courses...
...thanks for getting us back on track
It covers all the points Leno complimented Porsche AG on, regarding the fact that Porsche races many of its cars competitively that have little to no modification from what can be purchased at the dealer.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course:
"In 2011, the race will take place on Sunday, June 26.
The race is run on a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain; Pikes Peak! As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps muscle strength. The thin air also robs engines of 30% of their power at the summit. Competitors and vehicles must be in top shape simply to finish...let alone win!
This year the race has 11 classes and features a variety of automotive, semi truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck and motorcycle classes with a field approaching 200 competitors.
Every vehicle undergoes a rigorous inspection with a concentration on safety issues.
The current record is 10:01.41 and was set by Nobuhiro Tajima in 2007.
As challenging as it is, Pikes Peak International Hill Climb attracts no fewer than 11 classes of racers ranging from 250cc motors to 8,000 pound big rig trucks.
There is no other race course in the world like the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. That is why it attracts race crews that are willing to spend several hundred thousand dollars and months of preperation to compete for the right to be the King of the Mountain."

I recall all JZ's Road & Track stuff from the 80s (Calendars, magazine photos, and many of those "special" mags they put out on exotics/Porsches?ferraris etc.....stunning stuff).
The white 993 Turbo S he raced @ Pikes Peak in the late 90s was featured in an Excellence article. Similar idea to the latest GT2RS: absolute minimal modifications. This is the kind of thing that attracts me to Porsches, the same cars we can all buy (with enough $$$) going racing. Awesome.
Good luck to Mr. Zwart!

Tim-- Great memory. Luv to see more of that white Turbo S.
Speaking of great sights to see...
JEFF'S RACING RIGHT NOW!
Here's a back-up to the below link: the direct live web stream.
you should be able to watch Sunday's race live by clicking here.
Likewise, audio streaming should be here all day of the race.

^^ Jeff's Guards Red GT2RS just zoomed past the webcam, with the broadcaster talking about the smell of the Porsche's brakes.

Speedhunters.com's gallery, "PIKES PEAK DAY 3: AN ODE TO THE DUST:"
When you think about all the different motorsport disciplines in the world, the thing that you associate with each of those disciplines is what surface they race on. For example, GT racing will always be associated with big road courses, NASCAR will always be associated with super speedways, drifting will always be remembered as being born in the mountains of Japan and Pikes Peak, which is entering its 89th running, will always be remembered for its gravel, dirt, and dust.
As of 2011, Pikes Peak is 90% paved. Next year, it'll be completely paved. During day three's practice session in the lower part of the course, I thought I'd spend a good amount of time with the last bit of gravel section. I needed to see the dust get kicked up one last time.
While I was camped out in the dark woods of Gilly's Corner, Larry Chen was at the starting line surveying the pit lane and its going-ons. Here's video guy, Justin Shreeve, happily mounting cameras in the confines of a Porsche GT2 RS.
The sun is the enemy in the morning as you are completely blinded going into some turns.
Members of the media and the race staff drive by the pits on the way to the top right before sunrise.
There are not many places to "get away" from the chaos that is Pikes Peak. Luckily, Jeff Zwart has a trailer that he can relax in.
I've said this time and time again, no matter where you are on the mountain, you'll always be in awe of its beauty...
...especially when you see machines like Rod Millen's (which is Rhys Millen's Formula D car) Hyundai Genesis...
...or Rhys Millen's RMR PM580 tackle the course in the faint morning light.
Jeff Zwart stares off into the distance...
Pikes Peak, 360 degrees of gorgeousness.
Getting "the shot" has its dangers but totally worth it --even when getting pelted by rocks.
The competition in the 2WD Time Attack class is looking real close. Jeff Zwart piloted his Porsche GT2 RS to a time of 5:15 which placed him as the number two qualifier in his class.
First place in the 2WD Time Attack class went to Rod Millen, who was only faster than Zwart by a second. He completed the lower section with a time of 5:14!
Will Jeff be able to hold keep or break his 2WD record on the mountain or will Rod Millen be crowned as the new king of the 2WD class?

Congratulations to Jeff, Reigning Hill Climb King in the 'Time Attack' category.
Not only did he and Porsche's GT3 hold the class record going into today's race, 11:31.095, but he beat his own record today!
Just moments ago, he zoomed past the finish line for an official time of 11:07.869 in the GT2RS.
He raced against a friend of >25 years, Rod Millen, & the two of them were just interviewed on camera together, as Rod was 3 seconds faster, 11:04.912.
A fun chat of incredibly competitive and accomplished drivers.
Amazing work today, Jeff -- keepin' it sideways!
"Zwart has won his class at Pikes Peak – all in Porsche Turbo street cars – in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2002 – plus his 2010 win in the naturally aspirated 911 GT3 Cup, setting new class records four times.
Recently, he co-drove a Porsche Cayenne with Pikes Peak veteran Paul Dallenbach at the challenging TransSyberia Rally (Moscow to Mongolia) in 2007.
He also has an SCCA PRO Rally Championship (1990 with Rod Millen) and a SCORE Baja 1000 class win (2004) to his credit."

Thanks for the updates Jager. 3 seconds on that course ... that's close.
What a weekend! 24 hours at the Nurburgring and Pikes Peak, bookends of motorsport.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS Breaks Record At Pikes Peak
Yep! Even closer since Jeff's was the only streetable vehicle in the top-tier
Good to see the likes of Automobile, Motortrend, Autoguide, etc. proclaiming his new record -- the Peak's fastest street-legal car ever:
Porsche 911 GT2 RS Breaks Record At Pikes Peak
While Nobuhiro Tajima’s record-breaking run at Pikes Peak has been capturing all the attention after finally breaking the sub-1o minute mark for the first time ever, but another record was set at the famed Colorado mountain this weekend in something much more accessible to mere mortals.
Legendary Porsche shoe Jeff Zwart took a 911 GT2 RS up the mountain in 11:07.869, setting a new record for street legal cars. Zwart’s time was seconds behind Rod Millen’s Hyundai Genesis Coupe race car, which took the overall win in 2WD Time Attack. Zwart noted that “we fell three seconds short of beating an all-out race car that is hundreds of pounds lighter with no street safety or emission equipment,” and felt confident that the record would stand for years to come.
