I think the FM frequencies are different.

Keep a sharp eye on eBay. A low price is $150. A high price is $450. I would go with a CDR 220. Still looks OEM but a much nicer unit (IMHO). Good luck.

EU FM frequencies are on even tenths (98.4, 105.2, etc) whereas US FM frequencies are on odd tenths.

I have a CDR 21 if you're interested. Price is £44K - comes installed in a free 993 turbo.

I highly recommend the 220 over the 210. Not state of the art by any means but the 220 is a much better quality sound IMHO.

Last month I went through the same thing you are going through. I ended up going to a Mercede's parts place, new and used, and I bought a genuine Becker CD/tuner for $180NZ. I got the code and it's sweet. No inputs for an Ipod etc but that's not important too me anyway.
It fits strait in with no wiring mods and has the Becker logo, not Merc.
The sound is awesome for what I was after. If you have no luck with a Porsche unit give it a try. The stereo came out of a 1996 Merc.
Cheers

the frequency steps can be changed on the 220 and the 210 but not on the traffic pro (found out the hard way and now have a semi-unusable traffic pro in my car)
