Default Sumitomo tires

I'm ready to order some new tires for my 1996 993 and wondered if people who tried them are happy with the Sumitomo HTR Z III tires.

Thanks

This thread has multiple pages of opinions. Convinced me to try them, so far happy after about 2 weeks

There are dozens of threads on this subject... which is why I bought them too.
I replaced PS2's with the Sumi's and would never go back (unless Michelin would price match!)
If you drive aggresively try and go a little wider if you have room. They are not quite as sticky as some other tires and they seem to overheat (get oily) a little sooner than the PS2's did.

For the price they can't be beat. The Bridgestones are better tires performance wise but for half the price I thought I would give them a try. About a thousand miles on them and they are wearing well.

I have them and am happy so far with the limited miles I have put on them. Most everyone agrees they are good.

Ill go Sumi's with the next set. Price/performance--tough to beat.

Im on my last set of Bridgestone Pole SO3's that I purchased on clearance 3 years ago on tirerack.com Those are (were) great tires.

Kumho MX's were good tires---had 1.5 sets of those.

Tire history on my 993--8 years, 66,000 miles. On average, rears are lasting about 8000 miles.

Came with BridgestonSO3 Pole Positions
Replaced rears with SO3s
Replaced front and Rears with SO3s
Replaced with Kumho MX's--full set

14 months, 5K miles. Rears at 6/32, probably replace them after this driving season (Oct/Nov, ~4K additional miles).

They're a great street tire, can't comment on track use, other than one auto-x these are all street miles. Can't beat them for the price.

I did use the search and liked what I found, but a lot of the information was older. I was simply looking for updated opinions.

Sorry for any inconvenience that I might have caused you........

Thanks to everybody else who answered.

I have a set of Sumitomo HTR Z II as street tires for my 993, and they are horrible !!! I did an auto cross last fall with the Sumi's on, and the car understeered worse than an old front wheel drive V8 Oldsmobile Toronado (even with 2.5 deg neg. camber). Also straight line braking is horrible.

I guess the Sumi's are OK if you drive to/from the grocery store, but for spirited driving they are not. The only advantage of the Sumi's is the price, they are dirt cheap. So I guess you get what you pay for.

I have had other various tires on my 993, Bridgestone RA050 Pole Pos, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup, and now Toyo R888 (the two latter R-compound), the difference between all those and the Sumi's is astronomical (booth in performance and price...). The Sumitomo HTR Z III must be vastly better than the HTR Z II to be worth considering.

I have had both the Sumi IIs and IIIs, the IIs were on my 911SC, the IIIs are on the 993.

despite the common manufacturer, there is a HUGE difference, the IIs were awful, particualrly in the wet, I would not drive the SC in the rain. very scary tire.

the 993 isn't a track car, just a street car, but the IIIs are fine, up to some spirited driving. For the track, there are better tires, but also much more $$$.

I have been running a set of the III's for about 2 mos. Previous was Michelin & Khumos. The III's are excellent for the street. Very smooth & quite. I have 295 rear & 235 front. I ve pushed the car as fast as I dare on street curves. They grip very nicely. Way better than the Khumos. I would definetly buy again, especially for the price you cant beat them.

Good Luck

i just got back from my shop getting car ready for spring and my 1 yr old, 2,000mi Sumi III have a bulge.

I havent called Tire Rack yet but not that thrilled. Could be user error but the bulge on the inside is a little unusual.

Which wheels are those? Any shots with the whole car?

Sorry for the hijack...
