Hi,

I was pricing new shocks today and found these:

020. Bilstein shocks 1993 - 1998 set of 4VE3-B648-H0,BE5-B649-H0,BE5-6130-H0,BE5-6131-H0 1099.00

I believe these are the Bilstein HD's.

My plan is to replace my shocks but leave the stock springs and ride height alone, as my car is a daily driver, including in winter. No lowering is desired. Would these shocks just bolt in and leave my car at the stock height? Any 'gotchas' or special widgets I'd also need to buy to achieve this?

I did a search on this and other forums. There is so much information out there I could not find the answer.

Another question, is there a cheaper place to buy a set of these shocks than shox.com?

I did this with my prior 993 (installed HD's only, and left everything else original). My rationale was also the same: daily driver, including winter, etc...I regretted not getting the car a little lower and felt that I wasted an opportunity to not only improve the looks of the car, but the handling as well. IIRC, it was a straightforward swap of shocks. The stock "SUV ride height" isn't really going to give you that much extra clearance in snowy conditions (an inch?). My new 993 is going in for a ton of mods next week, and a new lowered M030 suspension is at the top of the list.

With your car set at ROW (or lower) ride height, 11/12/07 might have been just another day in your life.

That said, there should be no issue pairing Bilstein HD shocks with your stock springs. At least from a fit perspective.

You can probably find a cheap set of U.S. M030 springs and get a tad bit more performance. Here is my car, on Bilsteins/U.S. M030 springs. Drive it all winter long.

Make sure you check with Viper Bob or Steve Weiner before you buy. Prices are great and service is unbeatable.

I lowered both my 993 and 964 and have absolutely no issues with daily driving. I don't have snow, but I do have terrible roads in TX.

Personally, I think that you will regret not spending a few hundred dollars more for new springs. Both of my cars have a much more comfortable ride with the new suspension than with the stock, worn out set up.

I got the Row M030 springs with the Biltsein HD's. I was concerned about the car being lowered too much because my daily driver is an SUV and I didn't want it to look or feel like I was sitting on the ground. So, I went with standard ride height for the RoW's. I think it is something like 1 cm lower than the stock US ride height (I'll have to check the exact specs)...barely noticeable...but the ride and handling are altogether different (i.e. better).

Well, maybe I should consider lowering it 1 cm if it makes that much of a difference.

However I may not be buying any shocks at all this year if I have to spring for a new brake booster (see other thread). Stay tuned....

ROW Standard height vs US: 1cm lower (almost 1/2") on the the rear, 2cm lower on front. IMHO, the middle of ROW Sport range is plenty high enough for just about anything one is likely to encounter. -Jim

I lowered between ROW Sport and RS--not too low, not too high. I tend to bottom out more than in the past but the Gert Protection Bar helps in those matters.

If I were a daily driver, I would probably end up going HD's, MO33's, and a the same height Im at right now.

I have had some semi close calls with deer and elk in the past. I see dead moose on I80 through Parleys Canyon (Park City route) and wouldnt even want to think about hitting one of those, let alone any animal.

I hit a sheep in high school with my truck while out pheasant hunting. We stopped at the farmers house and let him know. Nothing happened to the truck but the farmer had to find a new girlfriend.
