Default Poll: How often do you add a quart of oil?

Saw the poll regarding what brand of motor oil everyone uses, so I thought I'd start one on another frequently discussed oil-related topic - oil consumption. Hope this hasn't been done already. Would be interesting to know the mileage on your cars as well.

Ummm..... Before fixing the leaks.. It was about 1qt per mile. I think I bought a seat on the oil cartel

Since my rebuild/seal - I'm at about 1 qt. @ 2000 - 2500 miles (street) on an engine with an overall mileage of about 125,000.... On the track - it does drop - and may go through a quart during a 2 or 3 day event....

Great poll - and thanks!!!

I've never checked the mileage, but my consumption is relatively high. I'm thinking I add a quart every 1000-1500 miles.

I've put 4000 miles on the clock since I bought it (58000 to 62000 miles). It has not used any oil. I changed it as soon as I bought it using Mobile 1 0-40 .

I used to add a quart once a month before I fixed a leak. Now it's dropped down to once a year (every 6000 miles/10,000km)

My mileage just passed 56,000 miles/90,000km

Default Level of Oil on the Dipstick

Since we are on the subject, is it true that filling the engine up to the top mark on the dipstick encourages oil consumption?...where do people fill up to? ...

Lightbulb 993 Oil levels and leaks!

I have always used Mobil 1 15W50 and have always kept it filled it to 1/2 way mark on the dip stick. Like most, I've had some oil leaks (checked it out 1 1/2 years ago (they used a special blue dye at the dealer) and had some minor leaking at the lower seal. It's been ok until yesterday (took a nice long drive in the country) and noticed some oil on my driveway (~ 1/4 cup).

I'm gonna take her in this week and get both upper and lower seals replaced. Any other suggestions while they are doing this job would be most welcomed.

Doing the lower gaskets is a pretty easy DIY: http://p-car.com/diy/valvecover/

I have a RMS leak and have been avoiding doing the whole clutch/fw seal project since my clutch is still strong. I am losing about 1 qt per 600 miles. I will do the clutch, etc. in about 1000 miles. Before the seal went, I was going through about 1 qt in 2500 miles.

Can you really lose that much oil from the valve cover gaskets?
