3.8L engine on 993 C4
I heard that, in some market, 993 C4 had 3.8L engine as the standard engine. Was that really true? Or, maybe, was 3.8L engine just an option?
I have never seen 993 C4 with 3.8L (in the US, anyway).
I think it would have been more logical on C4S or C2S.
Thank for your help.

Actually there were some over here in Europe.(remember having read an article in Christopherus about a 3.8L in a C2) But I believe it was something part of Porsche's special order program, i.e. not a published option.

check!...I have definitely seen C4 & C4S in the UK with the 3.8 litre option.
I will look at my paperwork to see the cost of the option, very rare as it was SO expensive.
I have the standard 3.8 in my RS, as healthy as it is i really am not over impressed....compared to the lump in a GT3 RS......150mph at 7500rpm...with 2 gears to go!....stick that engine in a 993 RS and it would be THE perfect Porsche

If you have a look in your (RoW) handbook, it lists under Engine Data the 'Increased Performance' version M 64/21S, 22S and 60R for TT - all 102mm bore, 3746cc - 300 and 430 bhp respectively ......
Perhaps the S engine designation is the source of some confusion ???
Cheers, Maurice

There was a factory kit option on all 993's in Europe, initially taking the earlier 272bhp engines to 285bhp, then from 1996 on the standard 285bhp engines to 300bhp. In the case of the latter, it is essentially the standard RS engine installed in a regular 993. This was available for all models, be it Coupe, Targe, Cab, S or 4S. In Germany, it cost around DM11,000 back in 1997. Sadly, I am not aware of any production figs, but the factory kit is relatively rare, for sure.
Hope this helps.

There was a code option "X51", 3.8L engine (300hp), available on the 993. At the end of the production of the C4S, that option became standard, but I don't how many cars were built.

sorry to disagree, but the 3.8L 300bhp factory kit was always an option and never fitted standard, not on the last 4S's, either. Jerry Seinfeld's was the last 4S ever to be delivered, and it has a standard 285bhp engine.
