Default 7MT -> 6MT swap?

I have a custom ordered 991 GTS that, to me, is a keeper. I love this car but if there is one flaw in it, it's the tall gearing of the 7MT. In the midst of all the 991.2 GT3 discussions about the R-derived 6MT option it struck me that further down the road (past warranty coverage) it could be really interesting to swap the 7MT for the 6MT from the R/GT3.2

As the rennlist community is really awesome in terms of technical knowledge, I would very much appreciate your thoughts on such an endevour.

Hard to even consider the complexities in doing this. I would think better to just find a modern 6 spd that you like and buy it. I have a 7 speed and trust me, its not that bad. Good luck.

I agree that the 7MT isn't horrible - I'm at 15k miles with no intention of ever selling the car. This was more a speculative question to see if perfection can be achieved (a 2015 NA GTS with the R MT's shorter gearing)

Seriously? Don't shift into 7th problem solved.

MT7 gets better the more I drive it but I'd still prefer a shorter ring and pinion combo

You might ask the folks at BBi or perhaps even Singer Vehicle Design.

But honestly, it might be cheaper and easier just to get a 991R. Seriously, cheaper and easier.

I thought the gearing was the same for 1-5 on the 6 speed as the 7? 6 splits the difference between 6 and 7 on the 7. I'd be happy to be proved wrong but I read somewhere where someone explained it.

There's another thread about the final drive gear ratio and possibly swapping that out, which would probably be easier (if they make the gear) and cheaper.

Once I stopped using 7th it solved everything. Just simply don't use it--you'll never shift into it by accident, and never wonder if you're going into 5th or 3rd again. It's a state of mind.

The only possible complaint I have is that maybe the gates are a bit closer than they need to be? I'd want to try the 6-speed before assuming the gating is changed though. I really need to find that source--it claimed the 6 speed is barely changed from the 7 speed, just removed a gear and tweak it. Not a new part or anything.

I've had several Porsche 6 speeds and I don't think the 7mt is bad at all. 7th is an economy gear for cruising and gas saving, states just that in the Porsche Need to Know. I don't think I've used it twice in 4 years and both times out of curiosity not need. The first 6 gears are all you need. Why go through the cost and aggravation for what might make no appreciable difference.

If what you are looking for is lower end power through shorter gearing you may have to shop other cars and not gear boxes.

Watch the Sharkwerks GT4 video by Matt Farrah (One Take). Sharkwerks had the gearing in that car changed. Think with that and the lightweight flywheel, he said it was about $10k. Forgot who did it.

I am sure it will be easier to find gearing that fits your needs versus entire tranny swap. With that said, I came from a 6MT 981 Cayman S which has a fantastic feel to my 7MT 991 Carrera S. The 7MT felt more vague and not as direct, BUT I installed the GT4 shifter with the aluminum classic ****, which adds nice weight and my shifting feels worlds better.

Did you install both at the same time? I just have the shifter only, stock ****. Wondering if adding the **** is worth it.

Have you established it as actually true that the six-speed has shorter gearing? I haven't seen a gear chart for any of the 991 boxes, but would be surprised if that was true.

When you say that your newly ordered GTS will be a keeper, I hope that you mean it literally because in my opinion no one will ever touch it if you ever decide to sell it. IMHO, no dealer, no individuals, no anyone will be willing to take a chance on it.

I'm thinking about a short shifter for my 991.1 C2S. I tried 7th gear once and it is a totally useless gear, unless I'm out on an interstate hwy in the middle of nowhere, running out of fuel. I don't even use 6th gear in fast 70 mph zones, for jaunts less that maybe 15 miles. NA 997 and 991.1engines like to spin and will reward u with a lot more fun when keeping the revs up. I wish that close-ratio 6 speed from the 911R and 997 GT3s were more readily available...

No, I did them at different time. The **** actually changed the shifter feel more significantly than the GT4 Shifter, also with the **** you can adjust the **** height. From looking closely at the stock Shifter and the GT4 one the only real difference is the shifting shaft length.
