Default MF to SD Steering wheel swap Q

I am swapping my MF steering wheel for a SD steering wheel. Just ordered the alcantara SD wheel from Suncoast and they said I need a $500 part in order to have it installed. After looking up in the forums I see that all I need is the wheel, the proper stalk, and a dealer install. The stalk costs $275 list and I can order from any other dealership for $200.

I asked Suncoast why they are charging $500 for a $200 part; if it included any other parts? Response I got was it also have a module. From what I found in my search is that is BS. Can someone who did this swap confirm this and if there are any other parts please advise.

Thanks in advance. I will def post pics when installed the new goodies!!

Seems like BS. I asked two other parts dept and they confirmed that all I need was the wheel, the appropriate stalk (one that matches your options), and dealer programming. I ordered my stalk from Paramount for $205. They seemed to be the most helpful and straightforward.

Having said that, I should be receiving my parts by the end of this week and installed next week. I will give you a solid answer by then.

Btw NYCPASSAT, what part of NYC? BK here.

Thanks for looking into it. I just placed an order for the steering wheel only. By any chance you have the part number for the stalk? I have a manual trans if that makes any difference.

I use to live in Queens and moved out to NJ a few years back. I kept my screen name over the years since my ownership of a passat (B5) back in 1999.

Cheers!

NYCPASSAT - call up paramount and give them your VIN. They figured it out/confirmed it for me.

I had my local dealer do this swap for me a couple months ago, they installed a new stalk plus a new clockspring. I paid just under $500 for both with tax and shipping. I can see how it's probably possible to reuse the clockspring however I feel better having the new one installed.

Very happy with the change, I prefer using the stalk for PCM adjustment vs the multifunction wheel not to mention having the paddles .

Hey RY991, did you previously have a heated steering wheel?

I went from non heated MF to non heated SD, I think there are only two part numbers for the clockspring heated/non heated. If I had to guess this is probably the only reason the clockspring could become mandatory.

That's the conclusion I came to as well.

I am just surprised Suncoast sells this as a mandatory "module" that cost $500.

Agreed, $500 seems a bit much If they are only providing the clockspring.
