Default Winter Tire Question

Putting on my winter tires on my 991.2 C2S (Michelin Pilot Alpine 4) and have a question.

These were from my 2015 C2S and the rears are 295/30/20. Obviously the new 991.2 has 305/30/20 on the Spyder wheels.

Will the 295 tires fit because nobody makes a 305 for the rear.

Yes, the 295/30/20 Michelin PA4 is the standard/recommended winter tire fitment for the 991 stock wheels.

I was told that 295 tires will not fit 305 wheels, if that was your question

I'm running Michelin Pilot Alpin 4's in 295's on my rears which have 305's as my summer tires. No issues.

Apparently Porsche sent out a memo to dealers about 295 snow tires not being a good match for 11.5" rims. I don't have documentation of this.

Tire Rack goes by rim width and doesn't recommend 295s on 11.5" or wider rims as they consider the tires too narrow for the rim. The OE size is 305 on 11.5" rims as you state. Pirelli does have a 305 snow tire but it's not N rated and doesn't match the front. All current N rated snow tires I'm aware of are 295 rear width or narrower.

While Porsche ships 295 width tires on 11" or narrower rims, the 991.1 GT3 12" rims come with 305 tires. An inch of rim and 20mm more width is more aggressive than running a 295 on 11.5". That's a different tire type and so forth though, so not exactly apples to apples.

I currently have the N rated 245/295 Alpins on my TT which has 11.5" rear rims and haven't had any issues. They're great tires.

The proper tire size depends on the width of the rim. If you have 10-11" wheels, then a 295 is fine. If your wheels are 10.5-11.5", 305 N rated is the better size to use. If 10.5" you can use either.

295/30 20 rim range is 10-11"
305/30 rim range is 10.5-11.5"

Thanks Damon. The issue for many of us is that many new Porsches come with an 11.5" rear rim and there are no N spec snow tires in a 305 size. Apparently the pirelli 305 snow tire doesn't match the tread of the same tire in the OEM front size as the front is N spec.

The result is we can either buy new narrower rims right away or fit a 295 to a wider rim. Because of that you will probably hear this a fair bit going forward.

If you are in a snow belt or drive your car in all weather it's probably better to get a dedicated set of wheels in 19" for those that can. 295/35/19 and 235/40/19 - have a few more winter options

Personally, I think I'd be getting winter tires mounted on 19" rims for my C4 winter set. A bit more cushion from the sidewall on rougher winter streets and if you slide into something (curb, etc.) you aren't ruining an expensive rim.

That is what I have been doing with my BMWs - winter set sourced from Tire Rack.

I'm planning to keep the winter tires on my OE wheels and buy a new set of dedicated summer wheels.
