Default Random Ping Sound at Idle

My 10K miles 2015 991 2S 7MT has developed a random ping noise when at idle. It sounds like a small piece of metal being randomly bounced around inside the engine. (similar to sounds of a motor cooling off after shut down). The sound goes away when sport plus is on (+150 RPM) or when the clutch pedal is pushed in. All else seems normal. I tried to search this issue and the only reference I found was a guy whose car was bought back by Porsche.

Any ideas?

I have scheduled a service check at the dealer for next week.

UPDATE
Car is at the dealer. They have been using their listening devices to locate the the source of the ping sound and they just told me it's coming from the engine near cylinder #1. What is odd is that when you push in the clutch the sound appeared to go away so I was certain it was coming from the tranny or clutch. They say pushing in the clutch only dampens the noise but is still there. Next step they are going to remove spark plugs and look inside with a camera. UGH.

Dealer says photos reveal scoring inside one of the cylinders. Info being submitted to PCNA for direction.

Causes?
BTW I always let engine oil warm up to 180F before exceeding 4000 RPM. Broke the car in according to recommendations in the owners manual. Changed oil on annual basis (5000 miles annualy).

Interesting. Definitely keep us posted as I'm interested in hearing (1) the cause of the issue and (2) how PCNA handles it.

Porsche is shipping a new motor for installation next week. The best outcome I guess. The car only has 10K miles on it. I will try to get a CPO warranty out of it too but not sure if they will go for that.
Beware the sound of random ticking - a piston slapping the cylinder.

Excellent news. I sorta wish my stumble would turn into a random ticking sound.

Thanks for the update!

You'll be fine. These are plug and play. I hope you get a CPO. That would be fair compensation during "loss of use" for the repair process.

In a way, fully documented, your car is now 'worth more' in light of the new motor on a 10,000 mile car.

Do the engine break-in again. Change the oil at 1,000 miles (ask the dealership to throw this in) and send a sample out to Blackstone Labs.

BTW the pinging sound only occurred after the motor oil was up to operating temp. When I brought it to dealer I made sure to keep it running until the service rep came out to hear it. The next day he called me and said they can't hear it anymore. I told him to bring it up to temp. Now I'm getting a new motor.

Default New Motor is In

After 3 weeks my car is back in service with a new motor. So far so good. It seems smoother and quieter than the original motor which had scored a cylinder. Now I have to break it in, this time starting from 10,560 miles.

The dealership treated me really well, also bringing the car service up to date. I was given a Cayenne to drive which was fun, especially compared to my MB GL.

Car25, good update. Thanks. So, would they entertain the idea of CPO-ing your car as compensation for the issue, and to keep you brand loyal and engaged??

Wow, glad you had a positive outcome. Did you ever find out the root cause of the failure?

Lex, they said the only way to get a CPO warranty would be for them to buy the car from me and sell it back to me which would not be advantageous from a tax perspective. Besides I had already paid for an extended warranty when the car was new. I am currently working with PCNA to make my "Porsche experience" better.

As far as the cause of the cylinder scoring I doubt they will ever tell me. They are sending the old motor back to Germany.
