I would have bought an RS (my dad retired from Ford) but I can't due to no dual clutch trans and cheap interior. A little too boy racer for me. I agree though, it's going to take a lot of sales from the GTI and Golf R. Both models could use a little more power. But refinement is something Ford isn't close to yet

I didn't own a GTi but I drove 2 Jetta GLi's as my second/winter car over the last 5 years. Both had DSG. Both mechanically identical to the GTi. I traded it in early for a 2016 Tiguan R-line. I got rid of the GLi for one reason only (I otherwise liked the car). The straight line traction off the line was just horrible. The tires would constantly spin. Even my 2 adult kids commented on it. Too much torque for the the tires/chassis. Never again. I WAY prefer the Tiguan as a DD. Same engine but slower due to weight and torque converter but way more drivable imho. That off the line traction was the worst in any car I have owned and that is saying a lot.

I could not agree more. I have a 2015 GTI Autobahn with the 6-speed manual. It sits next to my 2008 E92 M3 with DCT. I have a 2017 Carrera 4S on the way which will join them in my garage in about 3 weeks. For me, the GTI is a blast to drive and has been the most fun per dollar than any car that I have ever purchased.

Anyone driven or own the Golf R? Seems like it would be a fun DD to have.

Yeah, me too. Great car. That 8 speed tranny is awesome, it's never in the wrong gear it seems like.

I own a 2013 VW GTI Drivers edition(4 doors) with DSG w Unitronic 1+ ecu upgrade and DSG. Really like it a lot, drives great & good fuel economy (up to 36mpg).

I had a 12 Golf R for a few years before picking up the CPO'ed 13 C4S. The car is fantastic especially if you need AWD. In heavy snow it just goes. Unfortunately it had to go to make room for the 911.
I'm rocking an "Old School" VW's as the work car. 88 16v Scirocco.

Howdy all, dropped in from the 997 forum to read about the 991.2 and saw this thread. I've a 2008 GTI (Mk5) which I bought new when I moved to the US from Ireland. I've 145k miles on it, and recently purchased a mk7 GTI with the performance pack and a manual.
The GTI is quite similar in many ways to the 911. It's been evolved since the original, and it's a thing of huge pride at VW. For the money, nothing can touch it. When I get into either GTI after driving the 911, neither of them feel like a downgrade. I've driven a bunch of BMW's / Audi's new C-Class etc, and none of them have the fun-quotient and lightness that the GTI has.
I can't recommend them enough and highly suggest if you're curious to go and drive one!

How are the GTI's as winter cars? I am outside of Philly so we don't have the worst winters but still have some snow to deal with. Are they decent in the snow? I drive a Wrangler during the winter, wife has a Macan.

great feedback on this GTI thread. Always growing up with Mustang GT's/Cobra's then Z06's, I never would have thought I would fall in love with a front wheel drive 4 cyl turbo with an automatic. Funny how times have changed. Been a GTI owner since 2008 and going on my 5th one due to arrive soon.
