Default The Porsche Kool-Aid

As a newbie to ordering a new Porsche, I feel very frustrated with the ordering process. I feel that the company is suckering me into ordering options that are costly, but that I feel really should be standard on this car or cost a lot less.

It's like they're laughing all the way to the bank.

So Why does it cost so much? Is a base Carrera really a $100,000 plus car? Shouldn't the CS be the base car, and the GTS the CS?

I guess it's supply and demand. But really, I feel I am a victim of aspirational marketing. Porsche has elevated the car buying experience into an emotional one, not quite the level of Ferrari, but more cynical in my opinion.

I'm not a newcomer to exotic vehicles, having owned a few Ferraris, a Porsche, Maserati and numerous Mercs and BMWs in the past.

The last Porsche I owned was a 997 Carrera 4S Cab, and it was the most disappointing car I have ever owned. Part of this was the difference in expectation of the car and the reality of the driving experience. I hope my next experience is better.

No car is for everyone, if your last one was the most disappointing car you've ever owned, maybe they're not for you.

The good news = you can choose what to spend your $$ on. Any of these high end cars have an excess element to them. Not really the best financial choices correct?

Agreed... New one is an improved iteration. If the 997.2 was disappointing them the 991 won't do what it's supposed to for you either.

Options are ridiculously priced, and you're likely to pay another 15-20% of the car's MSRP in options alone. I agree with you that, for example, a $170,000 fully-optioned Carrera S is not something I'd ever consider.

That said, it's all pretty clear-cut and you're getting into something that you absolutely weren't forced into. We have drivers here who keep their cars simple and add only an option or two that they absolutely want. We also have drivers who option the hell out of their 911 and get exactly what they want.

I've driven a 997 base Cab and wasn't impressed, but the 991's performance, fit & finish, and overall perfection takes the cake for me. My GTS had ~$20,000 in options but it's all subjective and depends on your perceived value of the product you're getting.

OP on his test drive. "What advantages does this motorcar have over, say, a locomotive? Which I could also afford."

I've owned a 997.2. No comparison. 991 is a million times better.

Not saying the 991.2 isn't a good car but for the money a CPO 991.1 is the bargain right now.

I thought you ordered a 2017 Targa just a few weeks ago? Already buyers remorse?

Although it takes some getting used to, I actually like the Porsche a la carte philosophy. If Porsche chose to include all of the things you'd "expect" on the base C2, it would probably cost 110K, not 89K. It's an expensive car, period. The ability to order what you want and only what you want eliminates paying for fluff that may not be important to you.

Wow. I agree that they are expensive. Maybe even over priced. But this car does it for me. I have no interest in any other brand.

You've had a broad car ownership experience. Which one of your previous cars ticked all the right boxes for you? Sounds like the 911 isn't a good match, perhaps you preferred the larger powerful sedans like the AMG Mercs or the V8 BMWs??

If you weren't happy with a 997 C4S, what makes you believe you will be happy with a 991 or 991.2 C2 ?

It's your decision, of course, but sounds to me like you might want to slow up and think out your next automotive acquisition.

It's a passion for me. 14 year old boy on the farm and I had Excellence delivered to our house. Had my first Porsche, ugh, this is hard to say, over 30 years ago! Cheap 911S I used in college. Fast forward 30 years with marriage, mortgages, work and life and here I am almost 50 years old and finally looking for my next Porsche. For me it's the brand. I could have any Porsche 911 and I'd love it. They are iconic to me. I love the feeling of sitting in one. The steering wheel. The ignition on the left. The engine in the back. The sound. All of this talk about 991.1 vs 991.2 NA sound and Turbo sound means little to me. Hell, I drive a Tesla Model S P85! Not a ton of sound there, eh?

If you were severely disappointed in your first 911 experience I would echo the concerns of others. It's highly likely you'll be disappointed in the next one.

If you married a 5'2 blonde with a lot of opinions, marrying a 5'2 blonde with a lot of opinions who is 10 years younger for your next wife might not be the best choice.

Ask me how I know this.
