Nope, you had a 1999, 2000, or 2001 996 with the only engine available in the Carrera, the 3.4/300-ish hp. There was no S model and no other Carrera engine option. In MY2002 the 996.2 was released with the 3.6/325 motor. In 200? the Carrera 4S was released as the only Carrera S, and it offered Turbo wide-body and some mechanical bits, but still had the same 3.6 as the narrowbody, non-S Carreras. This was a carryover from the 993 "S" models, Carrera 4S and Carrera 2S, which were Turbo-look but had no difference in the motor.

I agree with most here that the new GTS needs a little more than larger turbos to command the premium, I also think the 991.1 GTS is "the car to buy" if all .2 will be turbo. Heck I might look at them to upgrade my 997.2 GTS-4 cabrio if it'll be the last non turbo. Either way thanks for all the info I learned plenty.

Uhhhhh..... I can't tell by your signature block if you like Porsches or not. Can you elaborate please?

Holy crap!

I cant tell you my sources ...

All I can say is that the ARB report merely *confirms* their assertions about the 2017 GTS

just think, the GTS with 450bhp/400lb/ft, and all that low end torque, add in PDK, SC, PASM-S, RWS ... that is
going to give the existing 991 GT3 a run for its money ... especially on tracks where low end torque
benefits low speed corner exits ... there might be quite a few GT3 owners embarrassed by the new GTS
which I think certainly means that the .2 GT3 will have the RS'es 4.0 500 bhp powerplant!!!!

frankly if you are in the market for a 991.2 I would be calling my dealer and putting a deposit on a 2017 .2 GTS ... the wait will be worth it!

Now you make me drool over the 991.2 GTS..

I think this up coming turbocharged GTS is going to be interesting. It will be the most powerful turbocharged RWD 911 variants besides the GT2 and also the most powerful turbocharged 911 that offers a manual transmission.

Exactly! It's the 991.2 variant to wait for!

Since the 991.2s was dynod at 450 then 480 for the gts. That would be substantial!

I'm now thinking that rather than looking for a good used TT that a 450 BHP GTS 4 manual might be the way to go if I can afford it, more modern with a longer warranty, new car smell, built the way I want it, ... plus likely similar performance up to a 997.1 TT in some aspects and better it in others (handling with RWS).

If you want the NA exhaust soundtrack then the assumed turbo 3.0 991.2 GTS still might not be the car for you.

Im not a fan of DynoJet dynos. They tend to inflate turbo engine output. Id like to see the 991.2 dynoed on a Mustang dyno. Cobb has a dyno run of a stock 991.1 on Mustang dyno posted on there site that produced 370whp. Would be nice to see a comparison on the same dyno.

Would the GTS or rather any 911 still have a 15% drivetrain loss? I thought it was due to the drive shaft plus the transmission that contributed, but doesn't the 911 not have a long driveshaft that would absorb torque, just gears from the main engine to transmission then back to the tires?

I also have seen modern RWD front engine cars reduced their drivetrain loss down to 11-12%, so maybe the GTS would be less than that given it's pretty modern.

I know - although 450 bhp on tap with lots of torque ... could be addictive!
