Default Gonna buy my first 911. Wondering about Depreciation.

Hello Porsche owners.

How much can I expect a new Porsche to depreciate over say 3 or 4 years?
For example, how much can I expect to sell a 150 K Porsche after driving it for 3 or 4 years. Not expecting to put a ton of mileage on it.

I'm trying to decide whether I should buy or lease and if I should get a brand new 991.2 customized to my liking or a preowned 2015.

I've never owned a Porsche before so it will be my first car.

I'm looking for a 4S.

When I spec out a 991.2 to my liking, it comes out to about 160,000 (Canadian dollars) + tax.

There is also a CPO 2015 Carrera 4S for about 134,000K that has about 8,000 miles on it.

Features include:

Black on Black
Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK)
20-inch Carrera S wheel
Wheel Caps
Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS)
Sport Chrono Package
Electric sunroof
SportDesign steering wheel
Power Sport Seats (14-way)
Premium Package Plus in conjunction w/Power Sport Seats
BOSE Audio Package

One big thing it doesn't have that I want is the PSE, but I hear I can get the dealer to install it. The other would be PDCC, but I'm not sure if it's something I absolutely need. Don't plan on tracking for now (maybe in the future). Planning on using it mostly as a daily driver.

So, what are your thoughts? Is that a decent price? What would you try to bargain it down to? And is this a much better deal (bang for your buck) than buying a brand new 991.2?

I appreciate your input. This site has been very helpful!

If you're worried about depreciation, buy CPO. The initial curve is quite steep on any car and Porsche is no different.

I put my 2015 C2S with a MSRP of $124,460 on my financial statement at $90,000 the day I drove it home. Figure another $10,000 a year from that point.

Go through the "Hot Sale" sticky thread above and imagine yourself as the seller, not the buyer.
I figured $30k on day one and I was low.

Check out this thread and you will get a lot of real world depreciation numbers. The drop from MSRP is substantial over a short period of time.

I bought a 2 year old low mileage CPO'd 911GTS from a dealer in Toronto for about 42% less than the original owner paid when he bought it new (including the taxes he paid).

I'm sure the dealer made money on the trade so who knows what the original owner got for it, but I suspect somewhat less than what I paid.

Today, two years later I think the value has held up quite well not only because it is still low mileage and is a GTS but also because the Canadian dollar has taken such a beating vs the it's US counterpart.

This being said I still see some similar cars to mine coming up on auto trader form at least 10k less than I paid.

Don't wonder about the depreciation, it's gonna happen and happen fast. Buy a CPO, low mileage car. Much better than new.

Is it going to be your daily driver? You kind of have to suck up the depreciation if you want a 991.2 right now.

If it's a weekend car then get the 3.8!!! CPO is a better warranty than new also...

It's car. They depreciate. If you buy new and/or not well, then they depreciate a lot. If you buy used and smart, they depreciate less.

Nothing special about a Porsche in this regard, other than the amounts involved are bigger.

If you want to experience some really exhilarating depreciation buy a Bentley GTC as I did a few years ago. My avatar is the favorite 911 of the six I have owned over 28 years. I owned it while I owned my present 991 Cab. I had to sell one and chose to keep the rapidly depreciating asset in order to sell the rapidly appreciating one. That 993 is today worth about the same as a new 991 Turbo S. Ignor any advice if I offer it! chris

like everyone said, "it'll depreciate like a piano falling off a cliff" -Clarkson (not as bad as the Bentley mentioned above)

I purchased a CPO vehicle to minimize some of that depreciation from coming out of my pockets..
$128k vehicle, after 3 years and 20k miles, $52k of the vehicle's value was lost

Leasing new is about the same out of pocket monthly as buying used (with a loan).

So do you want a car exactly right, broken in by you--but deal w a residual in 3 to 5 years?

Or...

Someone's used car, driven you-don't-know-how, and hope for the best re options. But own it in 5 years.

Also good to consider... Will you keep "for ever" (minimum 5 years), or look to upgrade in the near term.

The choice was clear for me.

14 month old 2014 991 C4s cab, 4,700 miles - our buy price about $45k off MSRP. MSRP doesn't include ceramic tint, Escort 9500ci, or three year prepaid service so the original buyer lost that as well. The car was also CPO'd. As noted, original hit is very large. Follow STG991s Hot Sale. We've done three CPO Porsches - 981 BS, 991 C2s, 991 C4s - all CPO. And I backed out of a very good Euro delivery Boxster GTS deal because I just couldn't accept the $20k-$30k hit I was going to take the moment I left the lot in Germany.

Frankly, I'd love to buy new and I have bought a lot of new cars in my life but for me Porsche's first year depreciation numbers are too large and the CPO program is too good.

Hah! I do the same thing. I knock 25-35% off my new Porsches the minute I buy them.
