Exactly why I bought a GTS

On the bright side. They gave me a Macan Turbo as a replacement car until my 991 gets the tranny replaced.

I wonder if long-time don the rod owners will try to swap to manual one day when told PDK has failed off of warranty.
As with anything else, transmission reliability follows a bathtub-shaped curve. We will always hear of failures on the left side of the bathtub.

Nobody really knows where the right side of the bathtub is, with respect to PDK. That's a good thing. It means it's a long way out there.

Another way to look at things:

- PDKs have been on the road since 2009. Failures, while dramatic, are rare.
- Manuals will need a clutch replacement at some point in their lives. In my experience that point is around 40k on a 911, and it costs nearly 4k.

Not if you know how to drive a manual properly. There are several members here on Rennlist that have over 100K miles on their original clutch and still going strong.

My dealer quoted me 800$ labor when I was thinking of upgrading my clutch on my 996 TT,but ended up not doing it.

And BTW,a new PDK costs 14K if you had to pay out of pocket.

PDK failure is actually not rare. If you do a search on the Panamera / 911 forums, you will find quite a few reports on this issue. My Panny S with PDK failed after I drove the car back from the dealership to my garage (20 miles). After many tries, they replaced the whole transmission. You should contact PCNA and see if they would do something for you (like free driving class, etc). PCNA took care of me when my PDK failed after driving home. I was extremely pissed but the dealership sales department did not care and just referred me to the services department. I took it to PCNA and they took care of me.

Like others, I went with a 7MT 991 GTS recently. No PDK. Not sure if the 991 PDK behaves similar to the Panny PDK. I just don't know when to shift manually (either too early or too late).

That is certainly possible. I had to do it around 35-40k on my 996 - but the first 19k miles were not my own. Who knows what kind of abuse it took.

I've had 4 Boxsters (all new) and never needed to replace a clutch.

So, maybe it's abuse and not torque+miles.

". . . there was another 991 which was bought a few days after mine was in the garage for the same issue. Both the cars were manufactured in Aug 2015."
Uh . . . the factory is usually closed the month of August for summer vacations. Wonder who assembled those August 2015 PDK transmissions?!!

Same thing happened to my '16 GT3.
Drove away from the dealer, 20 miles later get the fault. Turn around, take it back. They kept overnight, ran tests cold engine, ran tests with it hot. Nothing.
Have put about 600 miles on it so far and all is good. Planning on at least 1,500 miles before it gets track time. I think that will be a better test than my short weekend drives.

Mine was a Nov. 15 build, delivered at the end of Dec.

Probably no one at Porsche since they don't make the PDK transmission.

They are designed and built off premise at ZF.

I had 90k on my boxster when then engine exploded the second time, so I had the dealership take a look at it and they said I still had 70% of clutch remaining.

All ends well, got a new tranny put in. The the car is performing well. Hats of to Porsche who were quick to diagnose and rectify the issue.
