Price per Horsepower - Interesting Results
Hi everyone, first post here. After years of expatriation, I’m moving home to Scotland & getting ready to purchase my first 911. I’ve spent the last few months carefully considering the models & options of which I’ll maybe delve into once the final car is chosen but I thought I’d share the results of a quick evaluation I performed.
Having scoured the second hand market, I really couldn’t believe the high second hand prices of 991’s. Typically a 2 year old 2S or 4S is priced at the new base cost, the depreciation being only the optional costs. There are many cars available but never with the colour & options I like, therefore I started playing with the idea of buying new. What’s the point spending upward of £100K for it to be a compromise?
So, the Engineer in me started to analyse how Porsche were pricing their cars & what you get for your money. It doesn’t take long to identify what an S gives over a base Carrera & what a GTS gives over an S etc. but for me I want options like PDLS+, entry & drive, adaptive cruise etc. so to start a basic analysis I compared the UK cost of base specification cars with PDK against horsepower & the results are interesting.
It’s a pity I don’t care for Boxter or Cayman as they are extremely good value for money in comparison to the 991.
I’m sold on the GT3 but as we all know, availability is the problem.
I’m glad to see the Carrera 4 GTS fairs well as this is a favourite of mine. Even the Turbo does well.
The Cab’s & Targa’s are inevitably expensive & I only added them to the table to be complete, I’m not a fan.
Comparing Coupe models only, the GT3 is at one end of the scale & the GTS RS on the other.
It would be interesting to try & correlate second hand values over time.
Anyway, take what you want from this, I just thought it was a cool table.

Cool table. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Definitely more profit $$ per car as the cars get more expensive as expected.
Good luck on your car search too!

Try calculating the cost per HP done aftermarket. That's really high. And questionable as to the results.

I really did not, if anything I would be more interested in weight/HP. As many reasons to buy one as there are table you can make.
For me it was more nights spent dreaming of a car. The 911 came on top ... any 911. After that, I just wanted the most recent model year with lowest options i could find/afford

Obviously after all this you will now be getting a GT3, … or maybe a Cayman?
How about plotting Nurburgring lap times vs price?
No, wait, even better! 3D chart of 'ring lap times vs price vs hp! Which one goes the fastest with the least!

Comparing cars by hp/$ doesn't do them justice. I created a metric consisting of lap times (Hockenheim), hp/weight ratio & total weight. This gave the following top list of cars:
1. Lotus Exige Cup 260
2. Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera
3. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
4. Porsche 911 GT2
5. Chevrolet Corvette Z06
6. Porsche 911 GT3 2013
7. Ferrari F430
8. Porsche 911 GT3 2009
9. Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
10. Lamborghini Gallardo
11. Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder
12. Porsche 911 GT3 RS 2006
13. Mercedes SLS AMG
14. Porsche 911 Turbo S (991)
15. Audi R8 LMX
16. Porsche 911 Turbo S 2010
17. Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 6.2 C6
18. Porsche 911 Turbo 2009
19. Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI
20. Porsche 911 Carrera S 2011
21. Dodge Viper SRT-10
22. Lamborghini Murcielago LP640
23. BMW M4
etc.
Now if you take cost into account, things will turn out much more interesting still...
