Default looking to hire expert to consult on purchase

Hi folks--

New member here, I am planning to purchase a used 911 in the near future and am looking for an expert to advise me in mechanical/technical inspection.

I am looking to conduct a purchase like so:

1. Find short list of used 911s in that are 991 series (2012+), are (manual, convertible) come in (silver, blue, gray) exteriors and are (S, Turbo, Turbo S)
2. Use you (my would-be consultant) to generate the appropriate list of "watch out for this" questions to include warranty status, inspection checklist, carfax records to check, dealer tricks, etc on specific cars. This is where I really need your help.
3. Once I've qualified the car, help me find a local 911 specialist to independently conduct a PPI to highly stringent standards...similar to Peter Zimmermann's guide that is a sticky here.
4. Purchase and have the thing freighted to LA....I don't expect to find it locally.

I'm proposing I pay you 250 up front and 250 after purchase complete, and your only duties would be timely responses to my e-mails and phone calls as I evaluate each car in detail.

Ideally, you would:
1. have a mechanic/technical background
2. be familiar with 991 turbo series specifically
3. be detailed, responsible and conservative in your decisionmaking. E.g. you will protect my buying interests very closely.

My goal here is to not get suckered by the Porsche buying process and to not let my considerable excitement cloud my judgment.

I am not sure if I have posted in the right place, apologies if I have broken forum rules - I tried to review rules ahead to make sure I didn't break them.

Please PM me with your background/experience etc if you are interested.

Thanks!
Josh

Looks like you joined Rennlist, excellent first step.

Let us help you narrow your list and I'm sure we've got some local members who can help you find a reputable shop to do a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI). Between the information you'll get here and a few dollars spent with a good shop you'll know exactly what you're buying and a good idea of what you should be paying.

I've also asked a Mod to move this to the 991 Turbo Forum for better play.

Thanks so much for the quick replies and offers to help. Moving to turbo forum sounds good.

I had sought to hire someone (and still do) because as we get down to the specific cars, I expect conference calls and/or email chains with dealers/sales reps and would like to have someone on call short notice as I am likely to move fast on what I want. Happy to pay for that privilege.

That said, since there seems to be a genuine willingness to help, here's a few initial questions/comments. Apologies if they are answered on other FAQ's--bear with me as I am a newbie.

1) Must Haves--for reference
991 = 2012+
Manual transmission
Cabriolet
Silver, Gray or Blue exterior
S, GTS, Turbo, or Turbo S. Prefer Turbo series.

2) Anything to add to this list of places to look on a nationwide basis?
Cars.com
Autrotrader
Rennlist classifieds

3) Warranty--can you give me a Porsche warranty 101? Specific questions
a) If buying from a dealer but non-Porsche/CPO, e.g. "Driving Emotions" exotic retailer or an off-brand like a BMW dealership, what are the questions to ask and things to watch out for? pros and cons?
b) What is the standard warranty to be expected on 2012+ models and what are the things that cause it to expire or be in danger?
c) Dealers say "CPO is the only way to go otherwise you are at warranty risk" in order to justify 10K markup. With the right diligence on PPI and checking on existing warranty, I think this is false. Do you agree?

4) Cold/rainy weather. I have previously avoided any car that has seen winter or recurrent inclement conditions....is this a legitimate concern?

5) Common/known issues with used 991's specifically, especially turbos?

Thanks guys!

Also interested in any free-form advice you folks have to offer on the purchasing process in general. Lessons learned, not-so-obvious gotchas, great experiences, etc.

Subjects like dealing with dealers vs. private owners, buying out of state, insuring the car, maintenance do's and dont's during lifetime, who you have do maintenance, how you freight it to your location, etc etc

these are all the Turbo S Cab in usa at dealers... there are no Turbo cab listed at dealers (used)

new inventory would be dealer by dealer basis

http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/usa/...FGYXLS&styp_=s

you can search on cars.com autotrader.com speedlist.com

again, all 991 turbo are PDK..

no real problems.. just get a PPI from a dealer nearby the vehicles location to check for anything out of the ordinary/condition/signs of abuse.

u can alternatively buy new and lowball the dealer and get a great deal.. bought a turbo (non S) cabriolet here recently and got a good deal local from my usual dealer.

buy from a dealer... (used or new)

private sale, broker thru a dealer you trust (they handle money and title for nominal rate.. usuallu 250/500)

out of state doesnt matter if you use a dealer to broker, and have car inspected... shipping always do enclosed...

insurance... get adequate coverage from a company who insures similar vehicles..

mait=dont do ANYTHING.

if u need a shipping broker let me know.. i have a guy i use.. he doesnt ship.. he's a broker for those who do..

as far as mait... dont do anything.. just drive and enjoy the car... not sure how long you plan on keeping but the first oil change should be 15k.. which will be a while.

No offense man but are you for real? $250 now and $500 later for an on call personal assistant to help you buy a used 991 911 turbo S cab? Did you just wake up from the 70's after a lifetime of collecting books? Reality, 250 bucks won't even buy you an oil change for this car let alone an on call assistant.

If you are serious, all apologies. You seem super concerned about getting a clunker. A used car is a used car. A used car with no warranty is a used car with no warranty. No matter how much prepurchase due diligence you do it is still your baby when it takes a dump.

If a $170,000 used 911 turbo with a spun bearing and no warranty sounds like as bad of a nightmare to you as it does to me then I would follow this advice. Go to a Porsche dealer. Order the highest level car you can afford ( Base, S, GTS, etc.). Get the colors you want, the options you want, the piece of mind you want and enjoy your car.

all 991 will have substantial warranty remaining..

he should honestly find a new one and get a substantial discount thru utiliziing a fellow rennlisters repeat customer discount..

my dealer doesnt have any.. i bought the turbo cab they had in stock.

There is lots of goodwill and advice here, but honestly, if you're going to pay someone to help you on this sizeable purchase, $500 is not even close on a $170K purchase.....consider what you would pay a real estate broker to find you a house. If you purchase through a Porsche dealer, you have a sizeable business and reputation behind the sale to back it up.....so if you're still concerned, just buy new.

jbla / Josh: Did an L.A.-area dealer give you the run-around like demanding over sticker for a widely available car? Or did you have a really horrible experience with a past car, like a lemon? Or are you buying a car for the first time?

My advice to you would be to find a Porsche dealership salesman who takes the time to listen to your needs and helps you find the right car for you. I unfortunately don't have a recommendation for you, but certainly there are guys on Rennlist who can point you in the right direction.
