I don't know if this is 'clearing out' existing stock, as you could order this from the factory. You could have one of these built, so I don't think it's like there's a whole bunch of base model 991s sitting around and they're like, okay wait let's change the spec of them and re-issue the VIN. My understanding is that Porsche doesn't have tonnes of unsold cars in the pipeline and sitting on dealer lots the way a big volume producer might. But someone correct he if I'm wrong.

There is a rumor that 550 units will be built for a 991 based Speedster. They have traditionally come out in the last year of the model run, which would equate to a 991.2...

I already have the perfect Black Edition - 7speed, heated seats, BOSE, dimming mirrors, sunroof, sport seats in leather....full black interior.

If you do the arithmetic, there are now 21 variants of the 991. What is the virtue? I spoke to my dealer today. They are befuddled. How do you market 21 variants of a $xxx, xxx car? The logic escapes me. The chemical analogy is that this is the equivalent of diluting a valuable solute in a widely available solvent. The solute becomes lost or at least rare.

Skip ahead about 20 min to the really cool engine assembly with robot delivery part.

Have you seen any of the factory videos? They're pretty cool. Everything arrives at the factory and is robotically routed where its needed just in time for assembly. They clear out their engine inventory about once every minute or so!

Amazing that Larry's GT3 is featured at the beginning of the video and that NOBODY thought to tell the narrator that Porsche has two syllables!

Since most of the variants carry increased costs (which generally reflect greater profitability than the more base models) Porsche is happy to make smaller batches of many models rather than larger batches of a few models that sell for less.
Take the GTS -- sure, it's a "value" when compared to an S with Powerkit. But how many S's were sold with X51? 2%? 1%? So instead of making $17k on a couple cars out of every hundred, look how much better they do to bundle the X51 with CLs and Sport Chrono and PASM and existing C4 widebodies, and still charge $16000 more than an S. And you know they're making a killing on the GTS even by bundling those options.
And we all love it (nobody buys an S anymore now that the GTS is available). So everybody wins!
I just honestly don't see any downside. Dealers, maybe. They might get squeezed into needing to carry more inventory, and never having the right combination of color, options, model that a customer is looking for. Whereas if there was only Base and S, they could carry 40 cars in each model and have a lot of colors and options in each model.

So is there actually a reason to buy this or am I missing the "special" bits?

I have a 987.2 Black Edition. They actually are a good buy, you get a lot of options in a package that is discounted. The only problem I see is that they are only doing the base cars this time. Last time is was a 997.2 C2 Black Edition, and 987.2 Boxster S and Cayman S Black Edition
