Yes, the Standard S Exhaust opens automatically at high RPM.
In addition, it is open at idle.
It's only closed during low RPM driving, to spare you from the drone and goofy burbles.

It is interesting that you said it is open at idle, I have a pse equipped and mine is not open at idle, I can hit the button and hear the exhaust sound change, hit the button again and it will quite down. I know it opens up at higher rpm's even when off, but not at idle with mine.

What you say is right for PSE.

Idle for a Standard Exhaust (on an S) is programmed different than PSE.

I love it. I have had it on my last four 911's. Wouldn't want one without it.

I think if you turn the radio off by holding the power button it should remain off... pressing will only mute it.
When I tried it, it turned all PCM off, not only music. =(

I have a 991 3.4 and I had the dealer add it. I bought the parts from Suncoast when they had a discount. I have to say that it is very different. I don't know why anyone would recommend against having it. I love the deeper richer sound with the pops. Highly recommended. I also looked into aftermarket, but in the end I got the OEM. Definitely more expensive way to go, but peace of mind that it is a porsche part and also you can turn it off.

Set Media to Aux on your PCM.
Then you wont have sound.
Save it to Mem#3 if you have Memory Feature.

If I had a base 991 (3.4L) I would get a Sharkwerks center muffler bypass. Adds a bit more hp/T, takes 7#s off the back, quality fit, and sounds good all the time everytime! And it costs less than $1k including an indy install! My $.02

You are probably hearing the PSE and the sound symposer (ss). The ss is pipe connecting a resonator attached to the intake to the cabin. It produces an annoying drone and I stuffed a microfiber rag in it.

I tried to do the same thing with my girlfriend to stop her annoying droning, but she fought me on it

It sounds perfect that way.
Valves still open up automatically, at high rpm, which does sound great.
I just hate how drony it sounds with valves open at low RPM.
Are you sure the drone is caused by the PSE and not the sound symposer? When I drive my car in normal mode (which I rarely do), and turn on PSE. I do not notice any drone, or very little. However, if I put the car in Sport mode, I do hear some drone when cruising at low rpms, around 2,000. I am pretty sure the sound symposer only is active in Sport or Sport Plus mode, therefore I attribute the drone I hear more to the sound symposer then PSE.

If you aren't caught up on having the functioning button, there are some really great alternatives. Fabspeed makes a Maxflo side muffler and a center muffler bypass that when used in conjunction make the perfect volume and sound increase for a sporty daily driver. And you'd be about $2,000 cheaper than the Porsche OEM stuff..

And also run the risk of warranty issues because of the moded exhaust. To some, that is not a concern of course, but with PSE, you don't have to be concerned with that.

if not going aftermarket, a must have option no doubt.
