Engine control fault
Returning to forum after long hiatus between Porsches...sold the '95 993 C4 Cab a few years ago but took delivery of my new beauty, '12 991S just a couple of weeks ago.
Received my first Engine Control Fault. Warning says possible to drive but I immediately garaged it after only a short mile back to the house and scheduled service. What's the consensus on what possible to drive really means? I'm still becoming acquainted with all the new technology and am a little concerned about it. There was no loss of power or obvious issue. It's a PDK by the way.
Thanks!

It's yellow. It's ok to drive on as long as you want. Months if you'd like.
Can be something as simple as the gas cap not completely sealing or a simple emission related check valve. Totally benign but ugly and scary to see in the cluster the first time you see it.
Half the time if you drive on it, it'll go away on its own. Twice for me. First time at about 5,000 miles. The second time it went away before I could even get to the dealer. Nothing to worth about. If it doesn't go away on its own, the dealer will make it go away for you under warranty.
Congrats on the new ride. Compared to the 993 the 991 is like a Cray computer.

Thanks MarcusG. Yes, it's a world away from the 993 but I'm very pleased with the 991. Somehow Porsche was able to update it and leave it's soul in tact. My 993 was manual, the PDK in the new one is unbelievable...especially in Dallas traffic.

Even if the light goes off on its own, there will be a manufacturer specific DTC stored in memory, which can only be read by the factory scan tool PIWIS.
You can drive the car,no problem, but it's also a good idea to stop by the dealer and tell them to do a readout real quick. I don't think you need an appointment for this, just stop by,it takes 10 min.

Just went through this with my '13 C2S (8,000 mi). Service rep said it was an emission issue for sure but absolutely ok to drive unless it goes to flashing yellow. Took 10 days to get into service, and we didn't drive the car ......just in case.
Turned out to be a defective vacuum pump. Rep said it could have been over 200 different possibilities and the diagnostics does not pin down the exact problem for the tech. He has to figure it out.
Worst part of the whole deal was getting a Ford Fiesta as a loaner for two days.

Could be a bunch of different things. My guess is a low battery. What is your volts reading with the ignition on and engine NOT running? Use your MFD to see volts.

Do a search here...I think "Engine Control Fault" is a bad sensor in the cooling system that is NOT service affecting. I had one replaced as have others, usually showed up early on mileage wise.

I'd invest in a bluetooth OBD-II adapter and a smartphone app and read the ECU fault codes.

Gents - Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I am definitely going to run it by my Porsche store to have it checked. I'm very interested in that OBD II adapter. I'll check on the volts today. Been traveling too much and the weather has been crap here so she has not been out much.
Need to get it outside for more pics. But here are a couple more. Interior is yachting blue.
