After market Stereo mod- advice needed

Be sure to keep the PCM and retrofit it come resale.
I'd have no problem swapping it out for a unit with integrated DSP and decent amplification circuits like Pioneers Reference series has. I'd see driver (speaker) upagrades as a possible second stage if tweaking the DSP does not give desirable enough results. I expect that it will for most considering what's already there in a 991.
For those interested, this topic on another forum is a picture breakdown oshowing PCM removal:

That would be the way I would do it, IMHO.

That is what I have in mind. No need to touch the PCM

What are you trying to accomplish, sonically? What is your budget? Your component list is far from complete- twitters? (I take it you don't mean the social network.) What about the other drivers? Socalsteve is right. In fact, depending on what you are looking for a sub alone may get you nearly there. Its amazing what powerful extended and tuneful (not one-note rap blaster) bass can do in a car.

I'd be curious if anyone has taken out the base 911 speakers if they know what Porsche uses in the base set up. I know years ago when I upgraded my speakers in a '00 Boxster they were really cheap Nokia speakers.

Not quite cellphone speakers but yes made by Nokia. I'm not sure but I think the 996 base speakers were the same. I had them in my garage up until this year before I finally chucked them (looks like I may have gotten $65 on ebay).

Not yet...i am surprised so few people with base system have done the upgrade...anyway,
I will probably do it, once I find the time to drop the car for a couple of days...being my daily driver I am addicted now, and almost at the 2000 miles threshold! Can't wait to awaken the beast!!

I did the upgrade on a 2012 991S base stereo with great results. Left the factory PCM, added an Arc audio amp up in the frunk with a false floor, Dynaudio speakers, a Bit Ten processor and a custom sub for the rear shelf. Sounds amazing and with the Bit Ten and a laptop, it was dialed in perfectly. We got better sound and imaging by disconnecting the rear speakers. Cost around $3k. Console was never touched, besides the amp and sub, everything else was done under the passenger seat.
