Whats with the all encompassing hatred of Bose?

I got the BOSE on my new 991, it's fine, it's not great. It's enough for a car that's already this loud from inside the cabin due to road and engine noise.
I just ordered a Macan S, now on THAT car i opted for the Burmester after hearing it in a Cayenne. It is hands down the best sounding factory installed system in a car i've ever heard, there's not even a close second (that i've heard).

Bose is ok in 991, not great or special. I don't understand the hate factor as audiophiles know it takes a lot more than a couple of thousand to get a wow out of a system so the hate can not be coming from the audiophiles.

Agree, I think the Bose is okay. If you adjust the settings properly, it's not half bad, especially given how loud the car is and how awesome the engine/ exhaust sounds anyway.

I am quite happy with the Bose in my C2S. Having heard the Burmeister, I can state that with out a doubt that I would be even happier with a Burmeister.
Then again, I am quite happy with my C2S. Having ridden in a Turbo S I can state that without a doubt, etc etc. probably also for a GT3, a 918, an F12, etc., etc.
So what?

I guess I'm one of those guys that gets a small swell of anger everytime the word BOSE is used in a sentence. For a decent portion of my life, I researched, lived, breathed, ate, slept, dreamed, high-end Home Theater and 2 channel audio. I designed/sold systems that cost hundred of thousands of dollars. The hatred toward Bose is probably more jealousy of their marketing success.
They have hugely successfully convinced the masses that their low-cost, low-quality, infaerior products are not just good, but great. As soon as you mention the words car audio, music, or home movies, the vast majority of the US would word associate BOSE. I think that's pretty remarkable. As soon as I would mention the name before playing a note, most people have already made up their mind that the speakers sound good.
That being said, if you know what good actually sounds like, then BOSE will make you cringe. But, BOSE "engineers" have a very good understand what regular people think is quality sound. They don't make their stuff sound accurate, they make them sound they way people like it. If that is what you are after, then their mission is accomplished. Luckily for them, that's what most people want.
I think of it very much like the current state of Flat Panel televisions available today. The very best displays make you feel as though you are looking out your window. The colors are accurate, you get real life like graduation from white to grey to black, and obviously you get life-like detail. Well the TV I just described to you no longer exists. It's called a Plasma display. What happened? Marketing! Your local moron sales persons somehow created this world-wide BS rumor mill about Plasma and how LCD is better.
When I walk into a room with an LCD display(yes LED is LCD stop calling it LED), I can barely look at it. Every single one of them, no matter the calibration or cost look like crap. But they produce what people think they want, a bright picture. Newsflash, brighter isn't better.
Alright, I'm getting worked up. If you want to live in the dream world, buy BOSE. If you want something better out of life, do some homework. We drive Porsches for pete's sake! Be better!

There's another aspect of this that I think accounts for a lot of the hatred: bait and switch. Like you said the marketing draws people in. The finely engineered euphonics hooks them. (For you non-audiophiles, euphonic means inaccurate yet pleasant sounding.) From here on, for the folks who just want pleasant background noise all is well and good.
The problem is there are also folks who really enjoy the actual experience of listening to music. Not just having pleasant feelings from rythmic background noises, but actively listening, visualizing all the performers and every instrument across the sound stage, just deeply involved in the music.
These people are eventually going to figure out somethings missing. Sounds nice and full but sorta unreal, uninvolving. They find that the more closely they listen, instead of being more rewarded they are more frustrated. What they're listening for just isn't there!
I know this happens from having talked to people who had this exact experience.
That's the bait and switch: offering audiophile allure, delivering euphonic mush.
Then of course there are all the audiophiles who, when people hear their terrific and emotionally satisfying systems and start asking questions, before being able to answer anything have to spend half an hour explaining how its possible to sound good yet not be Bose.
I myself don't really hate Bose. They're only doing with speakers what Rolex does with watches. But I do wish Porsche had chosen for their mid-level system a manufacturer with a greater love of music than marketing.

To be fair plasma does consume a hell of a lot more power and is much heavier than current LED which are pretty great. OLED looks to be even better. I am guessing that's why plasma is more or less dead at this point. Are there some applications where it's color range would be better, sure. From a watching HD movies standpoint, LED is just fine for most. LCD was total crap though.

The Bose system sounds decent IF you disable the Surround mode and enable the Linear mode. Otherwise it is worse than garbage. What isn't clear is why these "features" were added in the first place.

I can't believe this thread has made it to the third page and the only issue raised about Bose is the quality of the audio.
A big issue back in the late 90's and early 2000's was that Bose used to sue individuals who badmouth their products on the Internet. Bose was known for its high priced products, and that all the revenue was spent on marketing and suing people. This is the main reason I hate Bose. I wish Porsche had gone with Bowers & Wilkerson instead, for the mid range offering. (Oops, I just saw on the Maserati website that the B&W upgrade is $5100. For that price, I'll take the Burm).
How times have changed with Yelp.
Although I'm a Bose hater, I still got the Bose because after hearing about NMurray's electrical issues, I wasn't about to let someone muck around with the car with custom car audio. Having now owned my car for 3.5 months, I can say I do not regret not getting "must haves" like PSE or Sports Chrono, but I do wish I had spent the money on the Burm.
