991 Faux Carbon Fiber Projects
Picked up a roll of this 3D CF Film on eBay (no affiliation). Surprisingly nice stuff...has a 3D texture to it giving it real depth. Even though the backing has an adhesive you can remove and re-apply numerous times to get it just right and work out any air bubbles.
As practice I took the driver's side fuse panel cover off. With some smoothing, heat gun and Exacto blade it came out really nice. Now I'm ready for larger projects. I think I might do the inner door pulls if I can figure out how to get them off.

Please don't take this in the wrong way, but after seeing a McLaren F1 in person almost two years ago (a car almost completely made of carbon fiber for lightness purposes), cosmetic CF just seems frivolous to me.
OTOH, looks like you did a good job on that piece.

My concern would be longevity..........and how it reacts with heat and sunlight. You did a good job on the fuse box cover.

truthfully, at first blush i thought it was lame but then i saw the picture and it actually looks pretty good. if you really think about it, its not any less lame then the painted aluminum pieces in the car itself!!

Ditto! The 12" by 60" roll was only $7. Most likely it isn't going to be suitable for most parts. Was fun to do it though...next up for practice is my iPhone cover.

I would love to try and figure out how to get the CF look on the lower parts of the side mirrors.
I had my front splitter dipped and expel filmed, looks great, but i haven't figured out how to remove mirrors. OP - fun project, looks like you did a nice job
cheers

The 3M Di-Noc Carbon Fiber Film delivers really nice results, but as shapes get complex it's harder to get it to conform with no bubbles and to stay tight on the surface. Here's a photo of my KTM 990 Adventure I used it on and there was a LOT of re-sticking and heat gun use to get it to lay right, and took about 1 hour. Its a different product than 3M vinyl, has a lot more body to it and requires heat when working it. I would think doing the lower mirrors would be challenging....

I never got the desirability of the carbon fiber look. Its really not that nice looking anyway so its more of an association based utilitarian thing that says "I just wanted you to know that I'm lightweight!"
That film looks great on a cell phone case or something though, and it looks like the OP did a great job applying it.

I was going to buy a CF front lip but wasn't sure if it would handle scraping etc, so i had that dipped and coated, looks good, and matches the real CF rear diffuser.
I think my shop can dip the plastic part of the mirrors, but its the disassembly that i can't figure it.
Not a huge deal, if i could find someone selling direct CF replacement for the lower part i would probably buy, but i have only seen the CXF uppers and the stick on thing that matches body color.
cheers

I ordered some of the same type off ebay to try on my fuse panel covers. Should have it Friday. Mine is called "4D." Only difference is I have Porsche CF interior trim, and it is high gloss, and the 4D film looks shinier, hopefully a better match for the stock stuff. There is a company in Great Britain called Super Tweaks that offers CF fuse box covers, but they are almost $200 each. http://www.supertweaks.com/
I figure this is only a few dollars, so nothing to lose. And I always thought the fuse covers would look good in a CF finish. And if it looks terrible, just pull it off.
I won't worry about the extra weight of the film, hehehe.......Motor Trend is pulling off 2.6 second 0-60 times on the Turbo S using Launch Control.
