Default Picking up the 50th today. Quick question for those w/ manuals before I do.

Are you happy with the 7 speed manual? Just read a few blurbs this morning about people being less than enthused with the manual box in the 991. I have not driven a manual in this car yet. Just wanted to see if owners of the manual are generally happy with the transmission? In other words, I have no doubt I want a manual, but I'm just wondering if the manual is frustrating to the point of disrupting the experience? I saw one reference to it being one of the 10 worst manual transmissions? Manual owners, would you keep the transmission if you could do it over? This is my paranoid 23rd hour vetting to make sure I'm not making a mistake post.

The transmissions are perfectly fine. Just go and drive your car.

991 manual is excellent. I'm sure the PDK is great for the track, but if you love rowing your own gears, you will really enjoy the mechanical nature of the manual.

For now, tho, ignore 7th gear. Just concentrate on driving in gears 2-5. They are very tall gears, and you'll have lots of opportunity to keep the rev range just where you want it to maximize the use of the engine performance and overall fun factor.

The manual transmission is fantastic. I can't see how anyone can call it "frustrating" or "one of the 10 worst". It's smooth, quick, and the gear spacing is just right.

from my experience with decades of manual 911s, I agree

Yep, the trans is excellent and the pedals are spaced well IMHO. That's coming from a Hurst C/P Muncie & Toploader guy.

I don't understand the negative comments (usually hearsay) about the 991's 7MT. It's not the "best" I've ever had, but certainly good. It seems a little notchy until the engine/tranny get up to operating temperature but once warmed up it's very snick-snick.
1st and 2nd are pretty low, 3rd-5th more closely spaced, 6th and 7th for cruising. I use 7th pretty much anytime I'm over 65mph for the gas mileage improvement. I've seen as high as 29mpg cruising at 85 with a bike on the roofrack, pretty amazing I'd say.

I've driven the 996 6MT quite a bit, and briefly the 991 7MT. Both were fine, with the 991 being better.

That said, it was not the best, nor smoothest ones I've driven. But it wasn't the worst. For German cars, I think they were both pretty good.

Best I've ever had was the Civic Si and the S2K (or really any Honda), with a close second being the Audi S4.

10 worst manuals? Crazy. The 991 manual is the best I've driven. Better than the Honda sourced manuals that I've had (Acura TL Type-S and RSX) and runs laps around BMW's six speed. Enjoy your new car and post pics!

Myself, I find the 991 manual to be an absolute joy. One drive with the 991 manual was all it took for me, she came home a few days later and my brand new 2013 Audi S5 Prestige Cab got traded in (lol).

The gear you must be in to get to 7th is 5th, and it's an easy up-and-up over to 7th anytime - and from 7th to anywhere else, 2nd, 3rd, whatever. Driven for 12K + miles now, really love it. Here are just a few youtube vids driving the manual, if you'll notice I just go to 3rd, 5th, and 7th on an entrance ramp.

Bessy was born before October 2012 so she doesn't have rev-matching.
