Default Battery charging / maintenance

My battery charger/maintainer has a cigarette lighter attachment, but I have not had any luck getting the "charging" light come on through any of the 12v outlets. Is there a trick or sequence to get the car to accept the charge through the outlets?

Separately, my charger's clamps are too close together for the negative clamp to reach the designated ground post, so I have charged a few times with the negative hooked directly to battery. Is the theory against this the spark/gas risk, or is here some other reason as well -- like, say, protecting the electronics?

Polarity correct? A cigarette lighter 12v adapter should work. Put charger in car socket before applying line power to charger

No luck still. Maybe I will just break down and buy one of the Porsche 12-volt outlet chargers...

Perhaps the cig lighter depowers when the car goes to sleep preventing charging through it. Did you try using the charger when you're sure the lighter is powered?

I bought this charger a few years ago...

That was before I owned a P-car (the 991 is my first Porsche), but I read that this unit is simply rebadged and sold by Porsche for more $$. Anyway, I've used it on all my cars (except the 991 which hasn't sat idle long enough to require a charge) and it performs flawlessly.

Power is present in the outlet.

Yes, that does look like the "Porsche" charger. Good tip, thank you.
