991 vs 997 comparison photo

Nice pic, Dan. But again, my vote goes for the 997.
I agree with “10 GT3”, and, coincidentally, I recently posted a very similar view that the 996.2 rear is the very best of modern 911’s. It retains the classic rear look, but builds upon an already beautiful, more modern rear design of the 993. It was just right, and exotic. The 997 rear is somewhere in between the “just right” 996.2 and, IMO, completely wrong 991. In my recent post I said that the perfect (aesthetically speaking, of course) 911 is a 997.2 with the rear of the 996.2. And that is exactly what the 991 should have been.

Mike, please bear in mind I'm comparing to other 911's, not to other cars. The 991 is definately a 911, front and rear, but if I have to make a comparison of its aft-end to a 993, 996.2, or 997, again IMO, it comes dead last. And in the progression of things, that is, in my own words, "completely wrong". And perhaps you're also correct that, maybe 99% of others would disagree with me. It is only my opinion.
I will also tell you this: when the 997 first came out and I looked at it, I immediately fell in love with it. It became an obsession. Still to this day, when I see a 997 on the road, even though I own one, I have to stop and admire it. The 991 has no such affect on me. And yet, one day soon, I will want to trade my "outdated" 997 and purchase a 991. As a 911 enthusiast, why wouldn't I buy the latest and greatest? What choice do I have? That Japanese Godzilla? Please...

Mbiondo, I meant no disrespect, nor was my comment intended as a put down; sorry if it came across that way. It just really is amusing to me that we find so much to nitpick about a car that most (maybe non-Porsche) people would just look at and say "wow, what a great looking new Porsche. I'd love to own one of those." I guess we are often most critical about the things we know best. Anyway, enjoyed reading your opinion.....

Mike,
I didn't take your opinion as put down or of disrespect. No need to be sorry. And I couldn't agree with you more that we are nitpicking about what not only we know best but also about what we're so passionate about. Most people will not see this car the way we see it. But as enthusiasts we are entitled to be more critical. As owners and patrons of the 911, we have earned a right to be opinionated about this or that crease, silly line, one-too-many letters in the back, not enough power, or too much power (yeah, right), etc. But for sure, the 991 is a 911, inside out, front and rear. And that's why I will own one. And so will you. And we'll be here, years from now, chatting about the 99x and what makes it yet a better car, or a lousy design with silly headlights, or something. And, yet again, we will buy that one too.
For your information, I read and like many of your posts.

Thought this was an interesting photo. Note higher waist line and hood. Apparently not a function of pedestrian crash regs as some believe but more to do with 20" wheels and desire to "flatten" the look of the car.
Recall that overall height is actually 2/10" lower for 991 vs 997 despite higher waistline.

I have always enjoyed the looks of the WB 993s. I think it represents the best of the iconic 911.
But, when the 996s came out ... I was not very happy with that iteration of the 911. Slab sided, amoeboid headlamps shared with the Boxsters. I moved to BMW M5 and waited.
When the 997 came out, I could not wait to order a C4S ! The 997 was everything (exteriorly) that the 996 was not. It moved me like the 993s. And, when the time came to give my C4S back, I grabbed up a Turbo. I love the look of the 997s.
The 991? Well, not so much. I'm sure the car will be terrific to drive. But, the 'evolution' of the 911 in the guise of the 991, while not off putting, is less than inspiring IMO. I don't have the excitement in my gut when I look at the car like I did with the 993 or the 997 debut.
I'll prolly have one in my garage, tho.
