I wonder if we're even looking at a 911 or a well disguised new 928?

The 991 spy shots are becoming closer to reality. The car has a stretched Jag XK look and the front hood is a pregnant/round (a la Beetle hood) to satisfy EU pedestrian regs. Oh well!
I think it's too early to start the usual camp building for the various idealogues.

I can't see anything but camouflage and fake covers. I guess you could take the spacing between the lug nuts and use that as a reference scale to measure the wheelbase.

If Porsche is stretching anything too far in the 996/997, it's the overhangs.

If they really want to build a new car, let it be a new bloody 911 with some real creativity and innovation, not just more OEM parts bin engineering and incremental second-rate vanilla (such as putting the Panamera cabin in the Cayenne.) It doesn't create "DNA" or a family, it's just shiny plastic switches off a Nokia cell phone from last decade.

No speculation here. The 991's wheelbase is 100mm longer than the 997 wheelbase. This has been confirmed.

That is what I have been saying all along. The 2020 CAFE requirement is really playing a role in the dimensions of all the new vehicles coming out. It has nothing to do with performance either. Just a bigger footprint doesn't have to get as high mileage.

Not a perfect comparo but close. The images were scaled to match the distance between the front hub and the door's front edge.

What you are pointing out is that the 914's WB is 4" longer than the 997 WB. The 991 will match that.

Therefore the 991 WB will support a mid-engine layout which I thought all along was a driver, driven by Porsche Motorsports. The thing is, it will look like a 911 (sort of) but it will not be a 911. A 911 by definition has its engine hanging from the rear.

I suspect the std 991 will still be rear engined, but the option for a mid-engine will be there.

I think that both reasons were at play in the decision.

footprint/wheelbase related ratio to gas mileage which CAFE regs want to increase mandates to 40-60mpg eventually in 2020 iirc

CJ has got it right however allow me to elaborate. The 2020 CAFE requirement says that all cars across the range a manufacturer produces, cars and light trucks are held to their own standards, must meet a minimum mileage standard. For 2020 it is 35 miles per gallon. So all the cars that GM makes must average out to 35 mpg by 2020, simple enough? Well of course not but I won't go into it here. For the most part the larger a vehicle is the less MPG it is required to get. Because of course it is more difficult for a larger car to get higher mileage rating. This allows the smaller economy and compact cars to get higher mileage to average out the bigger gas guzzlers. If a manufacturer cannot meet the 2020 CAFE standards it must pay a penalty.
