I have to say, though, there is something unique about RPM in terms of sound. Same power at 6,000 RPM vs. 9,000 RPM certainly has a different sound / feel.

Here's another way to look at it: if the RS made the same power / torque figures, but the redline was at 9,000 RPM instead of 8,800 RPM (looks like it shifts at 8,600 RPM in PDK sport, too), would you like that more? I think the honest answer is yes, for cool factor alone...

- regular GT3 owner throwing sour grapes at RS owners...

Thanks. Conspicuously close to the speed of the GT3 at 9k. Asked because of the reports of the car shifting at 8600 in some mag reviews.

Yes I thought the same thing. Reassuring that the 9k redline will be fine in the gt3 at this upper piston speed limit.

Maybe Porsche should consult with Honda as the Honda s2000 9000rpm vtec engine is still one of the best engines ever built.

And its cylinders are only 500cc each. If the RS had cylinders that size it would be 3.0L and could easily rev past 9k (but still not make over 400hp and ~250 ft-lbs). I think the extra 100hp and 88 ft-bs is a pretty good trade-off for lowering the redline slightly, no?

Maybe, if you could jump on it all day all night without problems for 100+k miles add a turbo and you'll have the upcoming next generation Porsche engine.

That's right - the new turbocharged Carrera facelift will have 3.0L motors (like in 1974 RS and RSR or 1976 Turbo Carrera or 1977 Carrera 3.0 or 1978 911SC), but because of turbocharging they won't rev beyond 7,500rpm (or maybe 7,300 rpm according to some magazines).

BTW, remember when Honda increased the displacement from 2.0L to 2.157L (less than 8%)? They lowered the redline from 9,000 to 8,200 rpm.

Well, the RS has cylinder displacement expanded by 27% over 500cc and it still revs to 8,800rpm. That destroys the Honda numbers (as well as the old 3.0L aircooled motors above, though the 3.0 RSR was pretty awesome)...

Totally agree Grant the RS engine is an engineering feat in itself. As long as it turns out to be reliable, and not combustible.

I think they'll sort it out (if needed). From first blush, doesn't look to be related to engine internals.
