Default 991.2 GT3

So now all the models of the 991.1 are out and in the public eye. What will the next GT3 get? 4.0? Not much room for any more HP on the 3.8. Seems kind of like the performance for the 911 as we know it is tapped out. It certainly would seem likely the FeFI or 960 will carry that torch onward......except for that lingering 991 GT2RS if that ever comes to fruition.

They can squeeze more out of the 3.8 by adding a turbo

I guess we'll have to wait for you to go to Daytona

Speciale revs revs to 9k and makes essentially identical specific output, but is obviously 8 cylinder, so it has smaller individual pistons despite 4.5 liter displacement.

In seriousness, I expect bigger wing (but not as big/brash as RS), canards and/or vents on front fenders, intake above engine instead of turbo body (I think that will be saved for the RS variant). 4.0 liter NA engine, 500 hp; further development of PDK, RWS, E Diff. Perhaps wider front track vs. standard 991.2, or they may widen the track for all the 991.2s.

Launched in 2 years at Geneva most likely; 2018,2019 model years.

How much more can Porsche squeeze out of an inline-6 engine?

I think they've already topped out with the 991 GT3 and by all accounts the new RS just sort of confirms that.

Two Cents

I believe the 9A1 was conceived and produced as a stop-gap engine to mark time between the Mezger and whatever is next. Mezger insurmountables (even for Porsche) are: high part count (supposedly twice that of 9A1), high manufacturing cost, and, going forward, inability to meet ever more Draconian environmental regulations. Political correctness often carries a very high price.
I see proof of the 9A1's "place holder" status in the fact that Porsche has invested ZERO in putting it into meaningful competition.

Don't know whats next, but probably smaller, probably force fed, probably semi-electric (at least at some point).

Hope it still sounds like a real Porsche.

I think this is spot on. I don't think there will be a 991.2 GT3 and GT3 RS, I think we'll see a GT2 and GT2 RS. Fits better with the switch to turbos for MY2016.

Especially with the Euro 6 regs that go into effect September 2015.

Another reason PAG was in such a rush to roll out the RS, and give it a quick production run cycle.

I would venture a guess that Porsche will slip in very modest performance gains for both a .2 3 and 3RS along with a few other improvements like 918 wheel in regular 3 and decals, more colors, etc for RS before going out with a bang for a limited special edition. Porsche has shown that they are quite content with minor focused improvement to enhance the value of the entire package and gain seconds around a track as opposed to getting into power wars. Also, I know there are doubters for the immediate future of the GT division and them sticking to NA but Porsche has shown they are committed to this enthusiast niche by continuing to release cars such as the track monster RS and the GT4 for the crowd that yelled afoul when the manual went away. I don't think they would make a drastic change mid-cycle when there is a lot of low hanging fruit to drop turbos in and bring up average fleet emission standards.

And yet, the Huracan and R8 V10 engine is Euro 6 compliant, no?

Audi especially is a brand that is very, very conscious of public image and political correctness going forward; how can they sneak in a large capacity V10 and Porsche can't do anything...
