Default How to track an "Out of Range" ship

My car is in port, unloaded and awaiting transport to my dealer. I just went through 12 excruciatingly long days as my ship, the "Florida Highway" crossed the Atlantic. I have had several request from people about how to track a ship via satellite for just $3 per tick.

On marinetraffic or fleetmon or any other site, it's typically free to track a ship on ground based AIS. This works when the ship is close to shore.

When it exits the english channel on it's voyage to the US, it will go dark, only trackable by satellite AIS (S-AIS). Most sites charge a fortune to get access to te S-AIS data, presumably because you only need this if you are running a logistics company. They didn't think about the crazies tracknig their Porsches across the Atlantic!.

On day 10 of the voyage, I discovered fleetmon ad-hoc, pay per click S-AIS data.

Open a free account at fleetmon.com and login to the account.
Search for your vessel at the top of the page.
If the vessel is out of range, you will scroll down and see a box like this:

Click on the box to get the Satellite update. You will then need to purchase credits (100 credits for $16, among other options) . Each S-AIS position you query costs 19 points. So just over $3. (totally worth it!).

Additionally, you need to get cleared to have access to S-AIS data, so the first time you try, you will need to submit the request to gain access. It took 48 hours until I got the email that I had been given permission to see S-AIS data, so if you plan on using this service, you might as well get that piece out of the way early. Once I was granted, I was able to click on the "get update" box and burn my credits getting ship positions in the wide open Atlantic. I was so relieved!

Just note that there are only a couple of updates per day, so only do this 1-2 times per day, otherwise you will query the position and it will be the same as your last request (ask me how I know :-) ) and you just wasted 19 points.

Good luck and happy tracking!

neuroguru, your dealer would have that information. The other way which is a slight guess is if you know when your production is done and it is send to Edmond (sp) you can see what dates ships are leaving for your port of entry.

With so many gt3's inbound, I wanted to bump this thread... Still works! Great way to watch the ship when it's out of range of terrestrial AIS beacons.
