996 GT3 laments....
I have a two car Porsche garage. I do have another spot at my mother's summer home 45 min away. I am now pondering whether to keep the GT3 996 and pay another $65k (trade in value) plus state tax on $156k w/0 a trade in.....I could then make that car a track *****...install the g t3 cup rear toe arms and reAr mono strut ***** and make it a track beater...maybe PCA club race rather than DE for the 991.

Frayed hit it on the head, with potential upside in the future. I'm considering picking up a 996 GT3 to have a manual in the garage - I think it is a good companion to the 991.

The 6-3 would probably be in J or K in PCA CR depending on mods. Very few K cars at races here in the NE. More J cars. If you wanna race, buy a 6 Cup. Tons of cars in GTC-3.

I am doing the same thing, although I have already converted my car to basically full track duty. Since I have bought it , it has come up in value a bit as well. Like NateOz said, I think it will compliment the 991 GT3 nicely in the garage.
I am however selling one of my Porsches, the 993 TT. With the recent value increase of the 993 TT lately I think I am going to jump off now while it's value is considerably higher than when I purchased. As much as I like the 993 TT, I rather the 996GT3. I know that many air cooled lovers would cry sacrilege but I just rather the raw uncomprimised nature of the 996GT3.

racing is a lifestyle. Not sure I have the time and commitment. To be fair to the 996, it needs to go...only 11.5k miles.

Seems a bit much having 2 GT3's but I'm in the same boat. They are such different cars, I sort of hate to cast off the 996, it's I think going to become somewhat of a classic pre-computer, pre lots of stuff car, even though it does not maybe have the panache of it's air-cooled brothers. When I first got the car it reminded me of getting on a high end carbon frame bike instead of my usual commuter - twitchy and wild. Mine is still fully stock and almost-new car condition with only 12k. I drove it yesterday and it's still that sort of experience. The 991 by any metric I can think of on the other hand is just a whole different sort of beast (and I'm still trying to be nice more-or-less following break-in recommendations). I guess there might be faster more manic cars out there but .......WOW

I say keep it and see where this journey goes. Thing is one of your cars would be ignored when owning them so whatever u drive the most sell the other. My recs- don't strip your 12k mile 6gt3. Keep it stock. Way better resale. Mike

Hate to say this, but I'd get rid of the 6gt3 if you get the new one. Yes, they are different enough but they are still both street/track cars so pretty close within the whole car spectrum. I already don't drive my single gt3 enough-- two would barely get driven. If a car doesn't get driven, I sell it.
The only risk you need to be aware of is the possibility that after having and driving both gt3's after a year, you decide that you still prefer the raw, mechanical, analog feel of the 6gt3 over the more modern, civilized 991gt3. May be worth paying the extra tax to cover this risk by keeping both for a year.
And yes, as other suggested, the 6gt3 is fully depreciated. I have a theory that the 6gt3 may even be the first of the water-cooled cars to catch the air-cooled wave of appreciation via the Mezger (GT1) block connection and due to it still being fairly analog and with no nannies compared to the more modern cars.

$65k is not a bad trade-in value at all, btw.

No worries. If you change your mind 5-7 years down the road, you could always ask me to trade your 991gt3 for my 6gt3. I'll consider an even trade if asked nicely.
