The Porsche factory allowed you to customize your seating preferences in that manner, probably starting with the 356A (e.g. 1958 Speedster with bucket for driver & standard seat for passenger!). By the way, you might be surprised to learn that not all customers wanted a bucket seat in their Speedsters back in the day! Quite a few were ordered with two standard coupe/cab seats. And some even were built with the rare bench seat (first photo/on a Pre-A Coupe)! Not that sporting for a Speedster...but great with your date at the local Drive-In!

By 1967/1968, you could get this beautiful seat combination (last three photos*) from the Porsche factory for your custom ordered 911 by special request! Those were the days...

My dad had two 356's when I was in high school, but my personal car was a beat up Cherokee. However, for dates I was allowed to take the cheaper and less valuable 1964 356c coupe.. But the reason I liked it was not really to impress the girl. It was due to the almost flat seats with no divider in the center... (Insert evil grin emoticon)

That's a ROW car in the vid with the 997 GT2 folding buckets. They are no longer available in the US. The very lightweight Carrera GT seats he's referring to were also a ROW seat; single piece, non-folding, without integrated airbags.

I see. Thanks for clearing that up.

BTW - what does ROW stand for?

As you can see by my post count, I was obsessive here from '04-'07 GT3 996 style. Then I started focusing on other interests. After being curious with the 997RS on eBay over the past 3 mos., I revisited rennlist. You guys are a terrible influence. far worse than crack dealers
Look at me now ? I have a new GT3 coming in JAN. It is all of you guys fault !!!!! thank you for that I feel alive again. This iteration is a perfect fit for me.

I want the buckets, but I'm probably (most likely) too fat for them.

I don't know a dealer in LA that has a car (918) that I can sit in for reference.

My dealer is trying to convince me to get the 18-way seats, but the price between those and the buckets is so negligible that I might as well get the buckets.

How uncomfortable are they? I'm a 40 inch waist (yes, I need to hit the gym, but don't think I can drop down that quickly), how uncomfortable would I be?

What aftermarket seats would they be akin to in size?

Thanks

A 997 with the GT2 style sport buckets might be easier to find. GT2 buckets were standard in the GT2 of course, the RS, the Boxster Spyder, and available throughout all the sports car model lines up until about 2012 I think. If you fit ok in them, you'll probably fit ok in the 918 buckets. If you don't fit, you probably won't fit well in the 918 style buckets either.

Aside from the dimensions, the new seats will have very few adjustments, with fixed seat backs. On a longer trip, spending several hours in an ill fitting, too tight, non-adjustable seat could be pretty miserable. Just my $.02.

The Recaro Pole Position is somewhat similar to the GT2 sizing.

hit the gym, change your body to fit the seats, the weight loss will lengthen your life, just another way how owning a Porsche makes you a better person!

Regarding. The angle of recline these seats have, can anyone who has tried them chime in? Are we talking bolt upright nascar style?

Take a look at the Chris Harris GT3 video at about the 5:00 mark. He's sitting in a fixed back 918 style bucket and it looks to have the same recline angle as the GT2 bucket (folding back but no recline adjustment) next to it.
I had the GT2 buckets in my Carrera and they weren't bolt upright. It was a decent recline angle for me but YMMV. If you can find a car with GT2 buckets I think it will give you a very good idea of the driving position with the 918 style seats, with the added caveat that the 918 buckets will be adjustable for height, where the GT2 seats weren't.
