the front bumper opening looks promising!

The Boxster and Cayman are like the scrappy siblings compared to their star brother – the Porsche 911. And now it looks like the rivalry is about to get even more serious, as our spies have captured this hotted-up Boxster doing some winter testing.
We've already seen Porsche evaluating a higher-performance version of the Cayman, rumored to be called the GT4. It would reportedly offer a taste of the thrills of the 911 GT3, but at a lower price.
The coupe appears to have a convertible twin in this Boxster prototype. The biggest giveaway of their possible relationship is the shared front bumper with larger intakes and an extra opening at the tip of the hood. Although, this one lacks the Cayman's big, rear spoiler in favor of a smaller decklid unit.
The good news for fans of shifting for themselves is that this tester is fitted with a manual transmission, according to our spies. Being a prototype, though, there's no guarantee that the gearbox makes it to production. At least in Cayman trim, these higher performance models might use a tuned version of the 3.4-liter flat-six with between 370 and 400 horsepower. Though, an earlier rumor suggested that a turbocharged four-cylinder could sit behind the driver.
Until we know for sure, glance at the gallery to see a Porsche that might try to challenge its big brother.

That boxster looks like a regular S with an aftermarket bumper. Don't porsche test cars usually have the name and logos removed or never installed? Maybe I'm missing something else on that car. Doesn't look like upgraded breaks.
I should tape some huge cardboard end flats on my GT3 and send some pictures to the auto mags. It would be some 2016 prototype.

^^^^ How could a gt4 boxster make sense? Also; if you look at the wheel sizes and style, not to mention components like brakes, that boxster is S-spec. That bumper is throwing off the uninformed, and giving idle but clueless bloggers something new to talk about. Let's not just unquestioningly lap up everything we see people.

Rumors I've heard is that GT4 gets 3.8 from the Carrera S and the GT4 RS gets the 3.8 X51 (+30hp) from the 50th Anniversary and Carrera GTS. Pretty low impact for Porsche to do this (no development nor regulatory approvals required).

My 2 cents, given Cayman 981.1 life cycle, I doubt there is time to do an RS. But if the GT4 is successful, the .2 will have an RS version. Just like with the first GT3 (996).

Those photos are not of a Boxster GT4. The biggest giveaway, is the fact that the Cayman GT4 prototypes are all running around with the Steel GT3 brake package (calipers and rotors are clearly shown in many photos).
The above link has close up photos that show the brake package is definately not the Steel GT3 brake package. One would think, if you did do a GT4 boxster, it would have the same brakes.
Hence my scepticism on the subject.

I hope they keep the brakes at 350mm and stop the brake size lunacy! 350mm is more than enough and gives so many more existing aftermarket options and leaves 18"s as an option.

Additionally, all prototypes are black from Porsche, not funky blue.
What we have here is franken-boxster.. Aka, some dude lost his front bumper?
