Default Experience with Tire and Rim warranty

When I purchased my GT3 from the dealer I opted to get the tire and rim protection warranty for 3 years. It cost me $1400. Fast forward to last month, I went for a spirited canyon run on a Sunday morning and I came back with nails in each of my rear 2 tires. I had 3K miles on the tires. Brought it to the dealership on Monday morning, got the car back on Thursday afternoon with a new set of rear tires. I don't daily the car so I didn't mind the wait so much, but the process is a bit of a pain in the ***, they have to get a tire warranty adjuster to inspect the tires.

Each tire currently is about $450 on tire rack, after shipping, taxes and mounting it would have cost me a little over $1050. I have about 1.5 years left on the warranty so I basically need one more flat to have really justified the cost. As I purchase future GT cars this maybe a good investment, however it may not be a good investment for my wife's next Cayenne since plugging a flat for a Cayenne maybe just fine.

What's your experience with the warranty and has it worked out for you?

Cheers,
SMGT3

Views are hit and miss here, and debated deeply. I purchased from the dealer for 1000 for years. Had a nail in the tire drove in, and was out in one hour no problem. Only thing I did was call ahead of time to ensure they had the tire in stock. Looks like you did well. I've had nails in my tires on my last five cars ....law of averages it was good for me.

Have had Pcars for over 17 years, never one flat. I put the money elsewhere.

I just don't feel it's worth the money. Rim repair is really cheap. Tires are wear item anyway

I get nails in tires always. Usually pays off for me. Some are 3 y and some 5 y terms for me. If I sell the car before then and don't use the warranty I get prorated balance back.

They make money on average, so you will lose money on average.

Yup. All insurance is risk avoidance. I've been on the good side with this program 250.00 avg per year no sweat. I have not used my car insurance since 1995(:

Bought a car Thursday. Nail on the way home from dealership (granted 800 miles) and I already got a new tire.

Previously also always paid off you can cancel and or sell with the car.
My CL65 wheels where $2100ea and the cracked randomly. Had 3 replaced under insurance.

I typically don't buy this coverage, because if I have to replace a wheel or tire, it won't break the bank. I do buy extended warranties for my cars so I don't have to come up with $30k for a new motor or $15k for pdk. I just bought an Easy Care extended warranty (gives me 3 years coverage after factory warranty) and it includes wheel and tire coverage. I just got a puncture in my rear tire and it was covered ($600). I still wouldn't buy only wheel/tire coverage as this was the first time this has happened

I guess it's just piece of mind like all insurance. My cars are not
Garage queens so it's usually paid off for me. No big deal though. Not a ton of money.

It obviously works for some people, but I look at it like this:

They wouldn't sell it if it wasn't profitable for them.
And if it's profitable for them, chances are it won't be profitable for me.

Costs me $200 to refinish a wheel by the best body shop in town.
Now I am a "roofer" so nails somehow make it into my tires... no, I don't drive the RS to job sites -- in fact I never go to job sites -- so no idea how this happens, but it recently did. $50 for a patch plug to buy me a couple weeks until my HREs with new tires get here.

Plus the dealership isn't super close to my house so I'd hate to have to deal with them for tire/wheel issues. Just not convenient enough.

I once paid $750 for a BMW tire warranty and ended up replacing 9 Run flat tires and 1 wheel within two years due to bubble. Defective tire design. I had a puncture with the GT3 and used the tire warranty but they still came ahead. Sold the GT3 and got some money back. Waiting for an RS and probably would not get the tire warranty this time as it is not a DD.
