Default Wow, I drove the 911R today!

A friend handed me the keys to his nicely spec'd (including the all-important single mass flywheel) R today and off I went for a couple of hours.

Wow - this is the car people are clamoring to spend $250,000+ over MSRP for?

Wow - this is the car that Chris Harris thinks is as good as it gets?

I couldn't be more underwhelmed. You can lighten a 991 platform until the cows come home, and play all kinds of Motorsports tricks on it, the fact remains it is too long, too wide, too big overall to have any enticing personality for me.

The only wow as far as I'm now concerned is my admiration for Porsche (which is a company I love) in terms of how they created such a frenzy through the limited production/allocation process.

I'm sure there will be lots of dissenting opinions here, which is certainly fair, but I'm going to stand by my feeling that the GT2RS and GT3RS 4.0 are exponentially more desirable cars than the 911R.

Bingo, if I'm going to spend $250k+ over MSRP it's going to be for a 997 GT3RS 4.0 and not a 991R. But then again I'm the idiot that would drive the car so it would lose 1/2 of its value because of all the miles I'd put on it.

Since so many of the 918 owners in the US are dealer principals, the 991R will be a flipping exercise once their 6 month hold period is up.

Harris said the same thing about lots of cars. The 991GT3, 991GT3RS, R... This is the world of the latest, greatest, newest, douchebag'iest. I personally thank you for you bravery in reporting as you have. It's truly rare for someone to speak their mind here and not follow the minions...

Put that motor in the gt4.
That car feels like my 997 size-wise. 991 is massive.
I'm with you but the motor plus manual is intriguing to me.

The 911R should be a variant that's available to go in and order/buy. Nice set up, but the marketing bonanza and frenzy makes it seem like it's the best thing to ever roll on four wheels. That's until the next model to be introduced comes along. The marketing machine will start spinning again.

After all, Porsche is in business to sell cars and make $$$. What's new?? Good for them. Some people just get over emotional with jaws dropping and drooling.

Something like this ..

Imagine how Harris would be howling over her!

Take my $$$$$

Interesting take on my post, not sure where you're picking up on any sour grapes? But actually just the opposite, I knew I didn't want one long before driving one and thus didn't take the allocation that was offered to me.

Based on cars that going after, I don't think a 911R missing from his garage is because he can't afford it. Great honest review.

I'm curious why a 997 4.0 is better, more interesting

Maybe for a change the decision is not solely based on finances. Maybe it didn't seem interesting, maybe he thought it was a short term limited edition, maybe he's after what he believes will be true future classics, maybe it's about the drive. I'm really embarrassed how 75% of you guys only see anything Porsche as an investment. Go buy watches, gold chains, stocks.

I thought you buy GT, drive or polish for year, sell used at MSRP + sales tax + PPF + gas = free ride, no?
