Default Am I crazy-Drove my old 997 GT3!

So my pops is looking after my 997 GT3 until he gets tired of it in a year or so as I only have a 3 car garage. I drove the car all last weekend after 1.5 years.
Oh my gosh do I NOT miss that car. Transmission is nowhere near the GT4's. The 997 is notchy and not effective for the track like the GT4 is. The engine is way way slow to rev up compared to 991 GT3 and frankly doesn't seem any quicker than a GT4. Top end it seems down over the quoted HP figures. I absolutely loved my 997 and was completely shocked after spending a day in the car. Only thing I liked better was the non-electric steering which felt way more connected. Still excited to get it back in my stable in a year or so but my god is the 991GT3 miles and miles ahead in enjoyment for me......even with the sulshy shifter!!

Interesting feedback - thanks for sharing! Maybe someday when you have some money to burn you can give the 997 the 4.2L Manthey (or other big displacement) upgrade with a light flywheel and 996 Cup shift cables

I've driven a 997 Cup but with sequential. Pretty wild beast. With the 997 GT3 I think I did 225 at Sebring and best lap with the 991 GT3 on fresh rubber was 219 i think.

Agree 100%. I drove a 997 GT3 for two hours, and after driving the 991 GT3 for 10 minutes it was clear that the 991 feels like 2 generations ahead. Literally better in almost every way.

But I still want a 997 RS 4.0.

I agree. I almost bought a 997.2 gt3 in 2012, so I drove a few of them. I went a different route and bought a car with a back seat. When I test drove a 991 gt3 in 2014, I was expecting it to be a little better than the 997. However, from the moment I turned the key, I was blown away by the improvements. It was on a whole different level. Started searching for an allocation that day

Ditto

Had 997 RS 3.8 & 991 GT3
Sold 997 RS
Drove 997.2 GT3 (non RS) a few months back
I thought the parking brake was on for the first few seconds...felt SOOOOO much slower in every way....acceleration, shifting, etc. Only thing I liked better was steering feel (and not by much)
Have no desire to add another 997 back..maybe GT4 ?

Don't throw me in the fire here, but having had a couple 997 GT3 variants, as well as a GT4; the 997 GT3 is a more engaging car to drive with better feedback I thought. Faster or slower than a GT4, not entirely sure as it's obviously my margin of driver error I am basing this off of.

All of the cars mentioned are great in different ways, GT4 is all chassis, GT3 is a blend of the engine and setup, and the 991 is a step in front both. But all serve different styles or wants, either way, giving some love to the 997's.

I agree that once you've owned a gt4/991gt3 you won't go back to driving a 997 gt3. Car feels dated, and not in a good way.

I'm in the minority. But I still say the .2rs is one of the best driving experiences ever to be had.

I think this has a lot to with the person. If you were raised in the rotary dial phone era, some probably are so glad that is WAY behind and now you look at you cool smart phone that you can dial and watch color tv (at the same time). Some were born in that era of the rotary dial and black and white screen and still love it and wont switch because X reason. Then you have the new generation that was born with color tv and smart phones however one idiot out of a million, they’re fascinated how us- inefficient humans came up with the idea of a rotary dial phone, and black and white tv , that he/she is fascinated from our past stupidity but loves every aspect of it and hoard every single model.

Example, mooty collects every 964 under the sun and has probably owned every 996/997 GT car in this country at least once yet from what I have seen on the board, not much love to the 991 gt3

That said, I’m going back to eating my stupid handmade chocolates that take a lot of unwrapping to get to, not always looking perfect, not always consistent taste but taste damn mind blowing when perfect. I should have just bought kit-kats from Safeway- easier.

Yes 991 gt3 better in every measurable way, but theirs more to it in life for some...

Better, more nimble and playful.
If you like rotary phones, get a 964. I like that better than 997.
But I just sold my basically CUP + spec 964RSA as I won't drive it ..
