Parts Markup Matrix Pricing
My dealer recently changed ownership and I was surprised to see the extent of the markup on low cost parts, apparently using a markup matrix model. This was just for an oil change, so the parts are inexpensive and therefore the markup is substantial ranging from 35% to 500%.
Filter was $65 (35% over list)
Oil was $14 a quart (200% over)
Seal rings were 200-500% over list
Cost of parts for the oil change was $200 plus
Total including labor was $330

So the total for all the parts and labor for an oil change was $330?
I have not taken my car in for an oil change at the local dealer yet as I prefer to do it myself but one Atlanta area dealer quoted $800 for oil change and look over. Since I didn't get them to perform the service I didn't get a breakdown of parts and labor for the service.

That isn't out of line for a total in changing the oil. They might be making more money on the parts but they are also not charging the total for how long the oil change takes.
When I changed my oil I used Red Line Oil at $15/quart and a filter from Suncoast $65. So I had $200 in parts and my own time in the labor to do it. It will take a good one hour to 1.5 hours to perform easily.

Much rather give them the business than either local stealer.
