Free Valve - Don't Count Internal Combustion Engines Out Just Yet
Many claim internal combustion engines have reached maximum efficiency and their days are numbered. I disagree.
Free Valve is one of many technologies being developed to significantly improve ICE potential. Check out the video and articles, then think about what it means for the debates on this forum regarding naturally aspirated vs turbo, potential weight reduction, maximum redline and hp/litre.....

I have been following this technology for a while now. Very interesting! I absolutely agree on its advantages.
I am also very intrigued about electric turbochargers. If manufacturers chose to go Turbo with everything, might as well use a technology that does not interfere with throttle response and sound.

Yup. Imagine 10k redline N/A motor with a little hybrid electric supplementation for torque-fill and to meet EPA metrics. All with little to no weight gain vs what we have now. That sounds so much better to me than turbo, no pun intended.

Mercedes just announced that they hit 900hp with the new 2016 1.6L F1 turbo motor. As impressive is the 45% thermal efficiency achieved as compared to modern road cars maximum of 25%-30%.
Still a lot of potential to be mined in the internal combustion engine.....

same basic technology, but packaging is fundamentally different. the technology has been around for over 25 years (even Freevalve itself is over 15 years old), but no one has been able to make it cost-effective for passenger cars yet.
