EPA is trying to make vehicle modification illegal
For those track rats who have or will convert road cars for use as track cars:

They're simply trying to close the loophole that currently results in parts designed for racetrack use only being sold and installed largely on street cars. There's gotta be a better way to achieve that goal, though either way it's gonna put some people out of business.

Soon the only customizing left will be vinyl graphics. Time to invest in a wrapping business.

It's ridiculous that they're now coming after you on the track as well as the road. SB 435 made it illegal to change an OEM exhaust on a bike from 1/1/13 to one that doesn't have an EPA stamp on it. Basically OEM exhausts only. After market exhausts, sound better, free up the engine to breath properly and just plain look better.
Have to say I've never heard of anyone getting a fixit ticket for having an after market though.
Bugger, should never have opened my mouth - it'll be fate I get pulled this w/e!!

LOL
your going to have to walk down a dark shady ally to score some catless headers for your car. A whole underground black market will open up.

This has nothing to do with the EPA going after racing. It has to do with the EPA going after companies that produce parts for street cars that are not street legal under the guise 'for racing use only', yet sell and install them on cars that they know are going to be driven on the street. This may be the EPA using an ax to do surgery rather than a scalpel, but they're merely trying to figure out a way to enforce the laws that are already on the books.

And unfortunately it'll get slapped down with massive fines, just like it did in California related to motorcycles. Try to get anyone to sell you an 'offroad use only' silencer for your streetbike in California these days.

Per the 996 forum thread, the EPA is now saying they never intended to include competition vehicles in this and are amending it so that competition vehicles can still be modified.
